Pogasys™ Electrosurgical Service Manual Page? Generator CONVENTIONS * This equipment, in conjunction with connected accessories, is intended to produce high-frequency electrical energy for the controlled destruction of tissue. + Safe and effective electrosurgery is dependent not only on equipment design, but also, to a large extent, on factors under the control of the operator. It is important that the instructions supplied with this equipment be read, understood, and followed in order to enhance safety and effectiveness. * Qualified biomedical maintenance personnel, on a periodic basis to ensure proper and safe ‘operation, should test this electrosurgical unit. Ethicon Endo-Surgery Inc. suggests preventive maintenance be completed on the unit every six months. + Refer all servicing (o qualified biomedical personnel. Your Ethicon Endo-Surgery Inc. representative will be happy to assist you in having your equipment serviced. ‘* High voltages are developed within the unit and may become accessible when the top cover is femoved. These voltages are potentially dangerous and should be treated with extreme caution. + High surface temperatures are developed on many parts within the unit and may become accessible when the top cover is removed. These surfaces are potentially dangerous and should be treated with extreme caution. Do not adjust internal potentiometers or software accessible settings without a thorough knowledge of the parameter affected. Improper calibration may lead to equipment malfunction or damage resulting in an unsafe condition to the patient and/or operating personnel. + Avoid contact with the output leads when the unit is activated. Periodically inspect the test leads. used for the output connections for obvious defects. ‘+ Test leads and cable insulation must be capable of handling high output voltages. ‘+ The user should verify that the power receptacle with which this unit is used is properly grounded and Is correctly polarized. Do not use ground cheater plugs or extension cords. ‘+ Refer to "Specification" section of this manual for power cord requirements, ‘+ Donot place liquid containers on top of the unit. Wipe spilled liquids off the unit immediately. To avoid inadvertent penetration of liquids, do not operate this unit in a tilted position other than recommended by the manufacturer. ‘* Never remove or install any parts with power on. * Use only Ethicon Endo-Surgery Inc. approved replacement parts. Your Ethicon Endo-Surgery Inc. representative will be happy to assist you in obtaining any replacement parts. © Although this unit will withstand momentary short circuits on the output, prolonged short circuits Service Manuat Page 8 ' may damage the unit. Short-circuiting the output should be avoided since it is neither necessary nor desirable. * This unit is not designed to operate for extended periods of continuous output. When testing, it is recommended that duty cycles be limited to 33% with maximum activation times of 30 seconds into a load greater than or equal to 500 ohms. ‘+ Minimizing operating temperature and extreme thermal cycles will extend life of the equipment. ‘+The heat dissipation capability of the heat sink may be severely impaired by activating the Pegasys" in other than a normal operating position. Testing the unit in any other position should be avoided. ‘+The output of electrosurgical generators will damage diagnostic and test equipment that is not specifically designed to handle such output. Maintenance Schedule ‘The Pegasys™ should undergo Preventive Maintenance (PM) every six months. The results of Preventive Maintenance testing should be recorded on a Preventive Maintenance Test Data Sheet. A Preventive Maintenance Test Data Sheet is included in this manual at the end of this Maintenance and Calibration section. Ethicon Endo-Surgery Inc. recommends that this Test Data Sheet be used each time Preventive Maintenance tests are performed on the Pegasys™. The completed Test Data Sheets should be retained in a history file for the unit, This data may be used as a reference for subsequent scheduled testing. Test Mode Hierarchy The Pegasys™ is programmed to assist in performing most system tests. The PM protocol programmed in the software steps through many of the tests outlined on the Preventive Maintenance Test Data Sheet To initiate these tests: Remove the top cover of the unit, + Power on the ESU and observe that all of the seven segment displays flash twice, after which, all indicators and displays will iuminate for approximately two seconds. '* During this two-second illumination press the “TEST” button on the Controller PCB and observe that the "TEST MODE RUNNING" LED illuminates. (If the “TEST” button is not pressed within the two-seconds, the “TEST MODE RUNNING" LED wil illuminate but the unit will not be in Test Mode. Press the "RESET" button on the Controller PCB and try again.) nm When a single beep occurs observe that the Bipolar Coag display =") AQ shows "1" and that one bar of the Bipolar Current Sense bar graph l ly is illuminated. ee ‘+ The bar count in the Bipolar Current Sense bar graph represents the Test Mode. Connect appropriate test plugs / cables to ESU as required. Verify that ESU is configured for appropriate line voltage. Record ESU Serial Number, Serial Number of each PCB, EPROM Code re\ and Power Supply PCBs, and test Mains voltage/Hz on Test Data Sheet. Pogasys™ Electrosur: Service Manual Page 27 ‘Generat Continuity Test: Continuity Test should be performed every time a unit is serviced. Using 2 digital ohmmeter capable of measurements <0.19, measure the resistance between the chassis ground stud of the ESU and the grounding pin at the end of the line cord. Verify that the resistance is within the specification on the Test Data Sheet. Record measured resistance on the Test Data Sheet. AC Hypot Test: ‘AC Hypot Tests should be performed every time a unit is serviced. Apply Hypot voltages as shown on the Test Data Sheet. All tests last for 1 second each. ESU power switch should remain "On" and power cord must be disconnected from AC line. All tests must be less than 1mA leakage (Hypot should be preset to alarm at 1mA) Record P/F for each Hypot test on the Test Data Sheet. Burn-in: Burn-in is not required every time PM is performed. Bum-In is intended to exercise the unit in instances where failed active components have been replaced. ‘A component is considered to be active if it creates or alters the shape of the output signal. Many components on the Main PCB (RF Amplifier and RF Output Circuits), Controller PCB (RF Drive and Relay Drive Circuits), and the HV Power Supply PCB (High Voltage Portion) are considered active. None of the components on the Front Panel PCB or Back Panel PCB would be considered active. Burn-In loads will become very hot. Be sure they are positioned away from any heat sensitive or conductive materials. Do not touch the loads during the Burn-In process. Notice Ethicon Endo-Surgery Inc. recommends that the Burn-In loads be discrete. The excessive heat generated in the Burn-In process may damage Electrosurgical Analyzers. Remove the top cover. Connect the ESU to the appropriate line voltage. Connect the Burn-in loads to the ESU. (50/100W to bipolar output, 2000/500W to monopolar handcontrol 1 output.) Service Manual Page 22 a 4. If the software detects a Burn-In problem, code “10" is displayed in the Bipolar digital display, blinking zeros ('000") are displayed in the Monopolar CUT and COAG digital displays and the generator is disabled b. The duration of each Burn-In cycle is as indicated on the PM Test Data Sheet. ¢. Completion of the Burn-In is indicated by “scanning” of the PCS™ bar graph and cycling of the tones and all other displays. Allow ESU to cool down before testing continues. 7. Record Burn-In P/F on the Test Data Sheet. Systems Tests: System Tests should be performed every time a unit is serviced To help make PM processes safer and faster the Pegasys™ has been factory programmed to “step” through most PM tests. Ethicon Endo-Surgery Inc. recommends that this feature be utilized in order to ensure proper testing. During the following tests the potential to come in contact with hazardous voltages exists. Personnel performing these tests must have a practical knowledge of electronics and related safety precautions. Pogasys™ Electrosurgical Service Manuat Page 23 Generator 1. Setup: ft a.
