Dear Joe,
I want to thank you for a promise you delivered on when you visited UAW Local 14 in October of 2020. I wrote
you a letter outlining what an electric auto future meant to our members and facility. It said that this was the
biggest transformation of our industry since its inception and that we cannot be left behind. You wrote ona
campaign sign “you won't be left behind, | promisel”. On Friday September 23 General Motors along with
the UAW announced that we will receive $760 million investment to make electric drive units! This will allow
our facility to make it to the other side of the transformation!
‘While this is outstanding news for our members, the union philosophy Is to look after all, not just ourselves.
For General Motors, our engine facilities are at risk of closing. The company is making battery facilities close to
assembly plants that are outside of our agreements. Batteries essentially take the place of the engines we
currently produce, We will take care of bringing the battery facilities into our agreements during negotiations
next year, The problem is that if nothing is done, we risk these engine facilities shuttering. Those engine
facilities can make drive units just like us, We saw the devastation of plant closures recently at our Lordstown,
Baltimore, Warren, and Kokomo facilities. Workers were sent across the country, away from their homes and
families,
We can prevent this from happening if we are proactive with the auto companies, For their vehicles to be
viable, they need an infrastructure to support it. Currently our grid does not support their all-EV plans for
2035,
‘We've experienced this before with the General Motors bankruptcy in 2009, when many of our facilities were
closed, yet Mexican facilities stayed open. Although | did not like it, | understood the business side of the
decision. This moment in time is something very different. If there is a retooling that needs to be done, It
needs to take place in our country! If these products are going to be sold in our country, they need to be made
In our country! I'm urging you to put together an EV task force that addresses this Issue, This grid
transformation bill should supersede the USMCA. These vehicles cannot function without our taxpayer dollars
upgrading the grid. The Departments of Energy, Transportation, Labor, and Trade are stakeholders in this.
Please save our American Auto Workers from the heartaches of the recent past.
In Solidarity,
Jom TORRY
