WEEK: 6 THE LAST SUPPER

OBJECTIVES
1. Narrate the event that happened at the Last supper
2. State the significance of the body and blood of Jesus Christ
3. Highlight the importance of the Last Supper

Jesus celebrated the Passover with his disciples in Jerusalem. It was the Last
Supper he had with them before his crucifixion. He directed His disciples to a
certain house to inform the Landlord that he would celebrate the Passover in his
house. The disciples went and made preparations for the feast. They would buy
unleavened bread that is, bread without yeast, a year old lamb without any
defect, bitter herbs and wine.

In the evening, as they were eating, Jesus told them that one of them would
betray him and they asked who? He replied that the one who would dip his hand
together with him into the dish was to betray him.
As they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it and gave it to the
disciples and said “Take, eat, this is my body”.
After supper, Jesus took the cup, when he had given thanks, he gave it to them
and said:
“Drink of it, all of you for this is my blood of the new covenant which is poured
out for many for the forgiveness of Sins”

After the supper, Jesus and the disciples sang a hymn to mark the end of the Last
supper. At the end of the hymn, they left for the Mount of Olives to spend the
night there.

SIGNIFICANCE
The Jews celebrated the Passover to commerate their liberation from political
bondage in Egypt in the time of Moses. In the Last Supper, Jesus gave the
Passover a new significance. It now signifies the spiritual liberation from sin of all
who believe.
The bread represented his body and the wine his blood which God would use to
establish the new covenant to give us the will to overcome temptations to sin. It
also represented the atoning blood Jesus would use to forgive our sins. Christians
all over the world celebrate the Last Supper on Sundays and special occasions as
the Holy Communion or the Eucharist.
