Contents (Mātikā)
After completion of the exposition of the corrupt Triplet (Saṃkiliṭṭha Tika), Lord Buddha
deals with the Applied Thought Triplet (Vittakka Tika), This Applied Thought Triplet consists
of three teams.
Out of these three terms, the Lord deals first with the first team. He designates:
“States associated with the Applied Thought and Sustained Thought”. He then deals with the
second term. He designates: “States unassociated with the Applied Thought but associated

with the Sustained Thought”. He then deals with the third term. He designates: “States
unassociated with the Applied Thought and Sustained Thought”.
Meaning: the first term denotes states that are dissociated with applied thought and also
sustained thought. These states are totally devoid of self or soul.
The second term denotes states that are unassociated with applied thought and
associated with sustained thought. These states are also totally devoid of self or soul.
The third team denotes states that are dissociated with applied thought and also sustained
thought. These states are totally devoid of self or soul.

Analytical Commentary
The first term “States associated with the Applied Thought and Sustained Thought”
includes: 55 consciousnesses associated the applied thought and sustained
thought and 50 mental factors, excluding applied thought and sustained
thought. These states can be classified into 4 aggregates, 2 bases, 3 elements
and 3 truths.
2 Bases: 55 consciousnesses associated with the applied thought and the sustained
thought constitute the mind base; 50 mental factors constitute nature object
base. In this way, there appear 2 bases.

3 Truths: 47 mundane consciousnesses associated with the applied thought and the
sustained thought and 49 mental factors excluding greed constitute Suffering

The third term “States unassociated with applied thought and sustained
thought” include:
matter and Nibbāna. These states can be classified into 5 aggregates,12 bases, 17
the conception aggregate. The 34 mental factors excluding feeling and conception,
the consciousness aggregate. Nibbāna fall outside the scope of the classification of
12 Bases: Out of 28 types of matter, eye constitutes the eye base; ear constitutes
the ear base; nose constitutes the nose base; tongue constitutes the tongue base;
body constitutes the body base; sight constitutes the sight base; sound constitutes
the sound base; smell constitutes the smell base; taste constitutes the taste base;
tangible object (comprising element of mass, element of heat and element of energy)

material base for mental phenomena, material vitality, material nutriment, element of

Nibbāna
Because realities are divided into 3 groups; namely with Applied Thought and
Sustained Thought, States without Applied Thought but with Sustained Thought and States
without Applied Thought and Sustained Thought, this division is named triplet (Tika). By way
of choosing the title for the triplet, there are two categories of triplets: triplet bearing the
name of the first term and triplet bearing the name occurring in all terms. Applied Thought
Triplet is the triplet in the first category, i.e. the triplet bearing the name of the first term
(Ᾱdiladdha Nāma Tika). In terms of the coverage. Because there are remnant states, i.e. 55
thought and sustained thought, falling outside its scope, Applied Thought Triplet is the triplet

Lecture 2
After completion of the exposition of the Rapture Triplet (Pīti Tika), Lord
Buddha deals with the Triplet of States Eradicated by the First Path (Dassana Tika).
Out of these three terms, Lord Buddha first deals with the first term. He
designates “States eradicated by the First Path”. He then deals with the second term.

He designates: “States eradicated by the 3 Higher Paths”. He then deals with the
third term. He designates: “States not eradicated by the First Path and the 3 Higher
Paths”.
Meaning the first term denotes states that are eradicated by the First Path.
The second term denotes states that are lessened or eradicated by the 3
Higher Paths, as the case may be. These states are also totally devoid of self or soul.
The third term means states that are neither eradicated by the First Path nor
the 3 Higher Paths. These states are also totally devoid of self or soul.

Because realities are divided into 3 groups: namely, States eradicated by the
First Path. States eradicated by the 3 Higher Paths and States not eradicated by the
First Path and the 3 Higher Paths, this division is named triplet (Tika). By way of
choosing the title for the triplet, there are two categories of triplets: triplet bearing
the name of the first term and triplet bearing the name occurring in all terms.
Dassana Tika is the triplet in the second category, i.e. the triplet bearing the name of
the first term (Ᾱdiladdha Nāma Tika). In terms of the coverage of the triplet, there

Couplet’. These couplet consists of 2 terms. Out of these 2 terms, the Lord deals
first with the first term. He designates: ‘Roots (Hetῡ dhammā)’. He then deals

dhamma)’.
Meaning: “Hetῡ Dhammā” means roots that can engender moral, immoral and

Couplets
Because realities are divided into groups: namely that are roots (hetῡ dhamma) and
States that are not roots (na hetῡ dhamma), this division is aptly named couplet (Duka). By
way of choosing the title for the couplet, there are two categories of couplets: couplet
bearing the name of the first term and couplet bearing the name occurring in all terms. Root
Couplet is the couplet in the first category i.e. the couplet bearing the name of the first term
(Ᾱdiladdha Nāma Duka). In term of the coverage of the couplet, there are two types of
couplet: couplet with partial coverage and couplet with full coverage. Because there are no
remnant states falling outside its scope. Root Couplet is the couplet of the second category
(Nippadesa Duka).

After the completion of exposition of the Roots Couplet Lord Buddha deals
with “root Couplet”, Lord Buddha deals then with the second couplet in the Cluster of
Root-related Couplet. This couplet consists of 2 terms. Out of these 2 terms, the Lord
deals first with the first term. He designates: “Rooted States (Sahetukā Dhammā)”.
He then deals with the second term. He designates: “ Rootless States (Ahetukā
Dhammā)”.
Meaning “Rooted States (Sahetukā Dhammā)” means states that are rooted or
have roots which can engender moral, immoral and merely functioning deeds. These
“Rootless States (Ahetukā Dhammā)” means states that have no roots. These
