Work Project 1:

a. Make an outline regarding the impact of technological advancements on the

hotel industry from the 1800s to the 2000s after doing some research and
reading.

 The practice of hospitality has been around since the dawn of humankind.
Commercialization, however, didn’t really start until the 700s. The first modern
hotel was not seen in the world until the 1800s, in England. The expansion of
global trade and colonization made it easier for traders to traverse long
distances. However, up until 1894, the only technology present at the most
luxury hotels was a telephone at the front desk office that needed to be
answered by a staff member.
 In-room radios started appearing in hotels around 1927.
 In the 1900s, leisure travel was a luxury only the wealthy could afford. The
hotel industry was gradually adopting technology.
 People started using alternate channels to book their accommodations once
the personal computer was invented in 1981, followed by the internet in the
1990s. The front desk has always been the first area of a hotel to adopt any
technological upgrades.
 Hotel owners had to buy new equipment to match the software, and they also
needed technicians to update the software. The PMS systems weren’t online
or in the cloud until 2010.
 For hotels, the year 2010 marked another occasion for celebration. The SaaS
industry moved the old applications to the cloud.
 In PMSes, the trend of API first has taken hold since 2017, making it possible
for third parties to integrate without necessitating a whole program redesign.
 Currently, mobile devices account for 70% of all hotel research and bookings,
with Gen Z leading the charge.

a. Do some additional research and write some of the notable contributions of

the following person in the growth of the hotel industry:

A. Ellsworth Milton Statler

 Every hotel room having running water and a private bath, features that were
previously unheard of, helped to shape the industry. Ellsworth Milton Statler’s
imagination and brilliance gave birth to it.
 Additionally, Statler was named the beneficiary of the Cornell University
School in Ithaca, New York, by his will.
 The restored building at Niagara University in New York, which was only
sponsored by the Statler Foundation last year, will act as the main hub for
student-driven event organizing.

B. Conrad Hilton

 There is no disputing his contributions to the hospitality sector. Along with

building a hotel empire, Conrad N. Hilton also established the Conrad N.
Hilton Foundation, which bestows grants to organizations that work to relieve
human suffering.
 Additionally, it makes efforts for the blind, the destitute, and education.
 From numerous universities, including DePaul University in 1954, University
of Detroit in 1953, and Adelphi College in 1957, Hilton received a number of
honorary degrees.

C. Cesar Ritz

 Ritz’s strength as a hotelier was his capacity to comprehend and meet the
wants of affluent clients, and this, combined with his fervent desire to
establish a hotel empire, drove him to lay the groundwork for the industry that
would later come to be known as luxury hospitality.
 Many of the additions Ritz made to his hotels are still considered standard in
today’s contemporary luxury hotels.

D. John Willard Marriott

 John Willard Marriott, a self-made businessman and relentless hands-on

manager who started from nothing and built a business unlike any other, was
the brains behind this hospitality empire.
 Opened the nine-seat root beer stand, which developed into a chain of Hot
Shoppes restaurants and eventually into the Marriott International hotel
business we know today.

E. Kemmons Wilson

 Wilson established a legacy that endures today by providing middle-class

residents with luxurious lodgings at affordable pricing.
 100 Holiday Inns had been opened by Wilson. He established the Holiday
Innkeeping School, later known as Holiday Inns University, in the 1960s to
impart the “Holiday Inn Way.”
 Wilson believed that achieving success meant never having to accept
anything less than exceptional. Regardless of your career choice, he once
stated, “In this country, you don’t have to settle for being average; you may
dare to achieve better.”
