EEN SI DING A large-scale study has been done by advertisers on the spending (26) of today’s teenagers. It has come up with some fascinating results. Girls across Europe ranging in age from 15 to 18 were interviewed. The researchers discovered that these girls want to be successful and sophisticated and are willing to spend to achieve the look they want - when they have the money, that is! Feeling confident is the most important factor when it comes to buying clothes. (27) interesting piece of information ‘coming out of the study is that German teenagers go for clothes that are practical and comfortable, while British and French teenagers are more concerned about appearance, (28) they all agreed that the clothes should fit them properly. All the girls (29) were interviewed shop for clothes regularly, half of them buying something from a department store or a large clothes shop at least once a month. They also see it as a (30) activity and going round the shops with their friends is the main way they learn what the latest trends are. Your shirt was made in China and your mobile comes from Japan. You can eat at McDonald's in Moscow and watch an American film in Rome. Advances in technology such as mobile phones, aeroplanes, telephones and the Internet have made the growth of transport and communication networks possible. Amongst other things, this means that people and countries can exehange information and goods more quickly and in a less complicated way in a process called globalisation. But what are the downsides of the global market? And how will it affect jobs in the future? Globalisation means we have access to more goods and at more affordable prices, but it comes at a cost. When a company moves production to an economically disadvantaged country because of the lower costs involved, people in industrialised nations lose their jobs. Meanwhile, workers in places such as Bangladesh and China eam low salaries and their working conditions are often poor. What's more, globalisation causes ecological problems. The number of planes, ships and lorries that are used to transport goods from one country to another is constantly on the increase, which means more carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. That in turn, leads to global warming. The good news is that consumers are becoming more aware of the issues, especially when it comes to how products are made. Increasingly, companies are being pressurised to improve ethical standards. (Adapted from Gateway by David Spencer and Gill Holley) Question 31. What is the passage mainly about? A. Go for a walk around the small town of Hainsbury and take a stroll in the park. You'll hear the chatter of children and see parents pushing prams. You'll see an ice-cream kiosk, swings, roundabouts and other attractions for kids. A typical small-town scene, you might say. However, you may be pleasantly surprised by how clean everything is. Not a scrap of litter in sight. The people of Hainsbury are undoubtedly good citizens. However, the real answer to this question can be found at the nearby primary school by speaking toa small group of ten-year-olds. The children from the school took part in a new project early this year that was very effective in making them aware of problems connected with the environment and in grabbing their attention about the issues involved. Although in some ways lessons were traditional, in the sense that the pupils were taught about how to recycle and about materials such as plastic, glass, aluminium and paper, the project also really encouraged them to take an active part in the leaning process. A good initiative you may say to yourself, but it did not end there. The pupils were so enthusiastic about what they learnt, that they arranged to meet after school to tidy up their local park. Considering its size, it was seen to be a realistic task. "Although we like to play there a lot, especially at weekends," said David, one of the schoolchildren, "we thought it was a good idea to clean up all the mess.” To the amazement of their parents, they spent the whole of an afternoon cleaning up the area. fier this first experiment, the children agreed to meet once a week to clean up a specific area of the town, News spread fast and soon others started getting involved and came to help the youngsters in their task of cleaning up the town. Now, every Sunday afternoon if you look hard enough, you'll find a sizeable group of people frantically filling up bags with unwanted odds and ends Ina world where we are bombarded with warnings about damaging the environment, it is surprising that there are not more projects of this kind. We need to replace apathy with a desire for action, and these children certainly provide a shining example. (Adapted from Change Up by Shirley Ann Hill and Michael Lacey Freeman) Question 36. Several times a week, teenager Karina Moore trains at her local pool to jump from the high-diving board into the water ~ in an attempt to become a national diving champion, Karina first learned about diving during a family break in Spain, where the resort's pool had a high-diving board. Young people were diving off it, and it looked fun, but Karina didn't join in, even though she was a strong swimmer. Then after returning home, she discovered a long-distance runner she'd always admired had started diving for relaxation — so she became more interested. Karina joined a beginners’ diving class at her local pool. They had several sessions jumping onto soft materials before trying the high board. In Karina's area, there's now lots of interest in high diving, but it's sometimes difficult for swimmers to find suitable practice facilities. Although the pools are deep enough, they're in use so often by diving clubs that other people don't get opportunities to practise. Fortunately, though, Karina's coach noticed her talent and helped her develop her techniques. After only two yeai she's winning competitions in her area. But what's it like to concentrate so much on diving? 'I train 20 hours a week’ says Karina, and I won't pretend it’s easy — you have to enjoy it to spend so much time doing it! It's not easy for my parents either, though — they drive me to training sessions early in the morning, and that costs money. But they've had financial help from sports organisations, luckily. And my schoolwork and social life are good. I still meet my mates — and there's always the phone! The only thing I hadn't realised was that the pool water would damage my hair ~ I used to love my long hair, but I've had to cut it short because it looked awful! But I'll definitely keep on diving!" Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 6 to 12. The majority of people think that their dream job is too hard to achieve, too competitive and believe that it is all a matter of luck. All this is true actually, but why should that stop anyone from trying to get the job they really want? A really determined person will always succeed and, in many ways, needs other people to give up trying so that he or she can succeed. Many job seckers feel limited by the choices they made at college or university. They may think that because they studied marketing, all they can ever do is work in marketing. All the evidence shows that, in fact, employers are less interested in acquired knowledge than the ability to think and learn. It is also very difficult to predict the needs of society. The needs of employers and the economy can change very quickly, and often unexpectedly. Ofcourse, ifit is a very tough time economically, it is hard to find employment straight after university, but it is by no means impossible. It might take several months longer to find a job after graduating, but there is work out there. My chosen career has always been competitive, but I never thought about the other people going for the same jobs. It may be human nature to compare your progress to your peers, but perhaps the best advice would be to try not to. Be focused on what you want and how you are going to get it. After all, it may appear that a friend who has a really well-paid job is doing well, but how do you know what their job is actually like? They may be working 12-hour days, have an unreasonable boss, or be stressed out trying to meet unrealistic targets. Have a plan in place, even if it is a sketchy one, Have both short-term and long-term aims, In my final year at university, my short-term aims were to gain experience at a local newspaper. My long-term aim was always to get a job at a national paper. It sounds easy for me to say it now, but I always thought that with really hard work, dedication, a willingness to put myself out and a bit of luck, I could get my dream job. A really key piece of advice is never get downhearted by rejection, because there will probably be a lot. You can achieve your dream job, whatever it is. You must never give up. Be prepared to work hard and for long hours without necessarily climbing up the career ladder. There is a lot to be said for learning your ‘trade’ from the bottom up. At the start, there will probably be little money, but it will be worth it in the end. The best jobs are not supposed to be easy - that is what makes them challenging. And if you like a challenge, just keep your head down and go for it. (Adapted from Objective by Felicity O’Dell and Annie Broadhead) Question 6. Which best serves as the title for the passage? A. Deaf people should enjoy a play as much as the hearing audience. This is the thinking behind the Americans with Disabilities Act, which requires that theatres become accessible to deaf people. Theatre producers, on the other hand, are beginning to realise that such a feature makes their product attractive to a wider audience - with considerable financial rewards. Interpreted theatre usually takes place at two or three performances in a theatre season. Preference for tickets is given to the deaf and their guests, but tickets are also sold to hearing people who are interested in seeing theatre interpreters at work. It is a colossal project for the interpreters. Ian Cox works for SeeTheatre, a Chicago-based association of interpreters. He says, "for about a month we work with the support of a Sign Language consultant to translate and rehearse an entire play. The workload is immense Consider that each actor in the play has about four weeks to rehearse his or her lines; we have to learn the whole play in as much time. And, when interpreting musicals, where timing, rhythm and harmonies be practised, the workload doubles." The most important technical aspect of theatre interpretation for the deaf is the location of the interpreter. Placement strategies can be categorised into three styles: ‘placed’, where interpreters are located outside the acting space and do not move; ‘zoned’, where interpreters are within the acting space, but usually move only during a change of scene or act; and, finally, ‘shadowed’, where interpreters move freely within the acting space, shadowing the movement of the actors for whom they are interpreting. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 6 to 12. Scientists estimate that throughout the course of Earth's history, more than a billion different species of animals and insects have existed, Today, there are only about 30-50. million species left, according to the World Animal Foundation, That means that for every species living on Earth today, 20 more are already extinet. Scientists study extinct species to get a better understanding of the past. In addition to studying what these species might have been like when they were alive, some scientists are interested in the possibility of seeing some of them walk the Earth again. ‘There are a number of serious proposals to try to revive extinct species. Some animals on this list include: the woolly mammoth, the moa, the thylacine, and the bucardo. These animals had very little in ‘common and in most cases lived eras apart. Scientists have proposed reviving an extinct species using two possible methods. In the first method, sex cells (sperm or eggs) are obtained from the extinct animal and are used to fertilize sex cells of a closely related living relative in a laboratory. The second method involves a type of cloning. For example, sperm from a woolly mammoth could be used to fertilize an egg from a modern-day elephant. The fertilized egg would then be placed in the live female elephant where it would live and grow until itis ready to be born, Incloning, the DNA of one individual replaces the DNA of another. In the woolly mammoth, for example, scientists could inject DNA from a mammoth into an egg cell from an elephant. The cloned egg cell would then be placed into a living elephant and allowed to develop in the same way as a fertilized egg. But some scientists believe species revival will never happen because both methods are problematic, One of the major challenges is how to obtain enough high-quality DNA from an extinet species to conduct an experiment. While it is theoretically possible under ideal conditions to preserve genetic material for thousands of years, these conditions rarely occur in real life. And there is a final, ethical consideration. Even if we learn how to reproduce an example of an extinct species, that individual could never have a normal life. Its natural environment is most likely gone and. it would have no parents to show it how to behave as a member of its species. So the animal would remain a curiosity and probably live out its life in az00. People question whether it would be ethical to revive one of nature's creatures for such a purpose. Only time will tell if scientists manage to carry out their ambitious plans. Even if they manage to ‘overcome the scientific problems, they may face opposition from governments or society. Some even feel it might be more worthwhile for us to focus our efforts on conservation and take care of existing species, so they don't also go the way of the woolly mammoth.
