THE BILAAN (MINDANAO) CREATION MYTHS

From Philippine Folk Tales. Compiled by Mabel (Cook) Cole 1916

In the beginning, there lived a very big man named Melu.

He is so big that he could occupy the space on the clouds
which is his home. He had teeth that were pure gold. He
continuesly rubbed his skin that made him to have pure
skin white skin. The dead skin he rubbed off his body piled
on one side that it became so huge and was annoyed
thinking of what he could do with it.

He then decided to make the earth out of the piled dead skin. He was happy of what
he had made. And then he made two beings smaller than him to live in the earth he
made. He made two men and made them so beautiful except their noses. Tau Tana
who appeared from below the earth interfered and made the noses of the images
upside down. Then Melu and Tau Tana whipped on the images and gave life. And
they saw that everything went well. Melu returned to the clouds while Tau Tana
went back below the earth. Then the people lived well.

Until one day, a big rain came and flooded the people. And the people were then
drowning because of their noses. Melu heard their cries and went down to help them
and turned their noses the other side up. And the people were saved.

The men were very grateful to Melu and said that they would do anything for him.
However, they said that they were unhappy because they have no other
companions. Because of this, Melu told them to collect and save all their hairs and
the skin that would shred off their bodies and when he would return, he would them
companions.

Melu made his promise. And thus, came more people on earth.
