Marxism: A Select Bibliography

Patrick S. O’Donnell (2023)

Those wanting learn more about the history, geography, and varieties of Marxism
should consult David McLellan’s Marxism after Marx (4th ed., 2007), as the bibliographies
at the end of each chapter come close to providing a comprehensive compilation of titles
for “Marx and Marxism” (see too the Marxists Internet Archive). This bibliography
presumes some prior acquaintance with Marxism generally, and while I have a
preference for so-called “analytical Marxism” (insofar as it serves on the order of a
‘prescribed’ or ‘controlled’ burn in the forest management lexicon of chaparral ecology),
there are writings of economic, historical, political, and philosophical value outside,
strictly speaking, that rubric (in other words, the former approach, while illuminating, is
a necessary yet not sufficient condition toward fulfilling the promise of a full-figured
assessment of what is living and what is dead in the Marxist worldview and tradition).
This is far from an exhaustive compilation thus I am happy if it fairly represents much of
the better literature on Marxism in English. I welcome suggestions for additional titles.

[As for my own bias, much—thus not all—of my worldview/lifeworld is Marxist (other
parts are Liberal, Buddhist, Jain …), in brief, it is a bit of a hodgepodge although I still
strive for coherence, as there is a defensible division of labor in this regard.]

Please note: Although I’ve included Piketty’s Capital in the Twenty-First Century (2014), it
is not a work of Marxian political economy. My take on the book more or less coincides
with that of Benjamin Kunkel in his piece for the London Review of Books (July 3, 2014),
and so I think his conclusion is spot-on (yet see the ‘update’ below):

“Piketty’s appetite for and command over data, for one thing, are worth emulating. And
surely if intelligent economists start reckoning with Marxian thought not as a historical
curio but as a long and living tradition, they won’t simply ratify propositions about

20
which Marxists don’t agree themselves. Investigated rather than ignored, Marxist ideas
would be variously confirmed, refined or rejected. For the moment, however,
mainstream economists, including the hero of the hour, seem reluctant to press their
discoveries beyond the borders of the respectable. Their journalistic counterparts are if
anything more timid. Only this can explain why Piketty’s discussion of inequality, a
preoccupation on the left for decades, has struck them as such a singular revelation. The
book is more exciting considered as a failure than as a triumph. Piketty has bid a
lingering goodbye to the latter-day marginalism of mainstream economics but has not
yet arrived at the reconstructed political economy foreseen at the outset. His theoretical
reach fumbles where his statistical grasp is sure, and he leaves intact the questions of
economic value, distributive justice and capitalist dynamics that he raises.”

Update: Since the above was first written, Piketty has become an avowed socialist,
beginning with the material in “participatory socialism” in Capitalism and Ideology (2020)
and culminating in Time for Socialism: Dispatches from a World on Fire, 2016-2021 (Yale
University Press, 2021).
