Jesus is the Lamb of God, our Savior! This is something we know now, but when Christ first appeared on the
scene, not everyone was sure about who He was. John the Baptist pointed to Jesus, explaining that previous
prophecies all pointed to Him. We are called to tell others about Him, too. What a wonderful and privileged
task! We can point the way to Jesus and thank God for who He is and all He has done for us. Jesus is God’s
promise fulfilled!

do you think it might be? You don’t know? Maybe you can
guess. Why don’t I give you some clues? I’ll describe what
I have here, and you can try to identify what it might be.
Take a moment to describe the object. This works especially well if the object is a little on
the obscure side, or if your descriptions sound somewhat odd without knowing what’s in
the bag.
Well, any ideas?? I suppose it might make more sense if I pull it out and show you what’s
in here. Take the object out of the bag to display what it is. See? Perfectly clear, right? My
explanations probably make a lot more sense when you can see what this is.
When we can point to things and explain descriptions, it becomes easier to understand
what they are. Did you know that in the Bible, this happened with Jesus? Remember, for
years prophets had spoken words about Him and explained what He would do and what
He would be like. But people didn’t completely understand. They didn’t realize who this
Messiah truly would be. Even when Jesus came to Earth and began His ministry, people
didn’t always realize who He was. But one man knew. John the Baptist had prepared the
way for Jesus. He had come to get everyone ready for Him, and He baptized the Lord.
One day, John was standing with his followers, and saw Jesus. He pointed to Him and told
his friends that it was the lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world. John wanted
others to know that this was the one they had been waiting for. Jesus was the lamb of
God, the savior. Prophets had spoken about Him, and people had awaited His coming, but
but John wanted to point out that THIS was the guy! Here was the One they had waited
for. John wanted to let everyone know that Jesus was who they should put their hope and
That should be our job, too. We can do more than offer clues and small glimpses at who
Jesus is. We can let other people know all that He has done, and how important and
amazing He is! We can tell those who need hope that He is our hope, the light of the world.
Jesus calls us, all of us, to be His disciples and to share His love with others. He is the most
important person we could know. We should be so excited about what He has done that

Or for any audience, consider reading out loud, pausing to discuss elements.
Depending on where you are starting in the chapter, you might need to provide some of
the background explanation, remembering who John the Baptist was and how he came
to prepare the way for Jesus. John lived and taught and told others that the Messiah was
coming.
John 1:29-31 KJV The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith,
Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. (30) This is he of
whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was
before me. (31) And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel,
It might be helpful to review who John was and why he came. John came before Jesus, to
get people ready for the Messiah. John baptized Christ in the river and told others that He
was the special chosen Savior. He was an eyewitness who told others about the Lord.
John 1:32-34 KJV And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from
heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. (33) And I knew him not: but he that
sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see
the Holy Ghost. (34) And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.
It was important for John to point the way to Jesus. He wanted others to know that what
Christ said was true. He also wanted to be sure that people didn’t look to John, but to
Jesus. John was there to prepare and to point to the one who was far greater than He.
John was explaining that all the prophecies and things that had been spoken about a
Messiah had come true! Jesus was the one they waited for. He was the hero, sent by God
John was in a sense, passing on the baton, turning his followers and disciples over to
Jesus, the One who was more worthy of listening to. John pointed his friends to Christ, and
John 1:35-39 KJV Again the next day after John stood, and two of his
disciples; (36) And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of
God! (37) And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed
Jesus. (38) Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them,
What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted,
Master,) where dwellest thou? (39) He saith unto them, Come and see. They came
and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth
hour.
John’s disciples knew (partly because he told them) that Jesus was special. When they
met this lamb of God, they told others, as well. They couldn’t keep to themselves the good
news that they met the Messiah! They brought other friends to Him.
should be so excited that we can’t wait to tell other people about Him. We can do this with
our words, but also with how we live, and with being a kind friend to others and showing
what it means to serve Christ. He is the one we have waited for, the Lamb of God!
John 1:40-42 KJV One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was
Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. (41) He first findeth his own brother Simon, and
saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the
Christ. (42) And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said,
Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by
interpretation, A stone.
