Sustainable Site Strategies

SOIL
70 to 100 percent of all root activity occurs in topsoil.
a living part of every sight, topsoil is composed of billions of lifegiving organisms interacting with organic materials and mineral components. Protecting topsoil of a site during construction is one of the most fundamental sustainability practices, and most easily overlooked.

WATER
Gravity flow irrigation is the most energy efficient.
Roof collection will make gravity irrigation possible, but its difficult to get the pressure needed. Tank height determines the head of pressure developed in the system. Because of this, pumps are often needed.

REUSE
Greywater should be applied directly to the soil
Most standards for greywater require that it never daylights. Greywater should be applied underground or under mulch.

If collected using a separate plumbing system to black water, domestic grey water can be recycled directly within the home and garden and used either immediately or processed and stored.

facT
In one pound of topsoil there are more than 460 Billion organisms. One cubic yard yields 740 trillion, while one acre yields 1 quintrillion living things.

facT
Irrigation systems can be water-efficient only if the amount of moisture required by plantings is accurately calculated and an ET value is obtained (evapotranspiration reference rate).

Applying greywater from ordinary hoses, flooding, and broadcast sprinkler systems could expose people to potential pathogens.

Protecting topsoil of a site during construction is one of the most fundamental sustainability practices, and most easily overlooked. Protecting topsoil preserves scarce resources and saves money the money that would be needed to restore it later. Weight on soil surfaces compacts and collapses spaces where water, air, and soil organisms can move. Single impact or repeated forces from foot traffic all contribute Oil and gas leaks contaminate soil. consider using a chipped natural material instead of paving. Staging construction equipment on or near already impacted soil can reduce site impact. Programmatic envelopes can also be planned to accommodate equipment. Take advantage of previously compacted soil. altering soil fertility can be too energy intensive to be sustainable. compost made from vegetation similar to what is being reestablished should be implemented.

Use solar power for agricultural irrigation. This eliminates the need for on-demand batteries. climate responsive irrigation can be achieved with solar as the sun could be used to regulate the volume of water implemented. Drip irrigation systems can save up to 90 percent of the water used by the other two alternative methods of irrigation: flood and spray. 95 percent of the water supplied by a drip system is delivered where plants can use it. Drip irrigation delivers water so accurately that anaerobic pores in the soil (due to the soil pores being filled with water) can be avoided. Surface traffic is not an issue with drip systems

Used with a drip system, greywater must be filtered to remove suspended materials that could clog the drip emitters. Greywater should not be used for edible gardens.

Sustainable Site Strategies

SOLAR
Passive solar strategies are effective in reducing energy use only if they are combined with, not substituted for, energy conserving techniques.
While ventilation can be implemented to maximize cooling, winter strategies such as insulation and weather stripping are critical for cooling spaces. design eaves and shades to exclude solar access to rooms. Use single room depths where possible. Use insulation the minimizes heat gain during the day and maximizes heat loss at night. Use low thermal mass construction. Orient for exposure to cool breezes. Maximize indoor outdoor relationship.

Materials conductivity (k) is a measure of how readily the material will transfer or conduct heat. Siting Position the building along its long axis in the east-west direction. Place most windows toward the north to protect from solar heat. Exclude sun and provide maximum exposure to breezes.

NOTES

Landscaping Make use of tall (Iron Bark) trees to shield from hot winds. Use flowers, grasses, and bushes adapted to the local climate conditions. Building Design In hot and humid tropical climates, with small day/night temperature amplitude, natural ventilation might not be a desirable option due to lack of effect. But, when convenient, place large operable windows on the leeward side of a dominant breeze. counterbalancing the windows this way provides greater ventilation than equal openings on the windward and leeward sides. Lowering the external surface area will help prevent solar gain along with using light colored building materials. for humid climates, create a well-insulated tight shell and facilitate contact of any thermal mass with the ground.
