Hundreds, Thousands,
Millions
General rule:
Numbers larger than NINE should always be
expressed by numbers in written English, while
numbers under 10 should be written out.

Examples:

1. The CEO of the company has 20 hotels all over the country.

2. She is three years old.

3. I received 300 messages in just two hours.

NUMBERS IN THE HUNDREDS


RULE: Begin with the numerals one through nine followed by the word “hundred” and fi nish by saying the
last two digits:

Examples:

1. 462 - Four hundred sixty-two

2. 999 - Nine hundred ninety-nine

3. 350 - Five hundred fifty

NUMBERS IN THE THOUSANDS


Rule: Say a number up to 999 followed by the word “thousand” and fi nish reading the hundreds when
applicable.

Examples:

1. 1,200 - One thousand two hundred

2. 5,354 - Five thousand three hundred fifty-four

3. 45, 000 - Forty-five thousand

4. 999,999 - Nine hundred ninety-nine thousand nine hundred ninety-nine

NUMBERS IN THE MILLIONS
Rule: Say a number up to 999 followed by the word “million” and fi nish by saying fi rst the thousands and
then the hundreds when applicable.

Order: Million - Thousand - hundred

Examples:

1. 1, 850, 600 - One million eight hundred fifty thousand six hundred

2. 56, 200, 250 - Fifty-six million two hundred thousand two hundred fifty

3. 700, 405, 650 - Seven hundred million four hundred five thousand six hundred fifty

Note: For larger numbers , the order will be TRILLIONS, BILLIONS, MILLIONS, THOUSANDS AND
HUNDREDS

Examples:

1. 1,500,870,200 - One billion five hundred million eight hundred seventy thousand two hundred.

2. 12, 600,500,435,150 - twelve trillion six hundred billion five hundred million four hundred thirty-five
thousand one hundred fifty

Decimals, Percentage and Fractions

DECIMALS
Rule: Say the number before the decimal and then followed by the word “point”. Next, say each number
beyond the point individually.

Examples:

1. 6.6 - Six point six

2. 6. 60 - Six point sixty

3. 14. 88 - Fourteen point eight eight

4. 9. 8964 - Nine point eight nine six four

5. 50. 995 - Fifty point nine nine five

PERCENTAGE
Rule: Say the number and followed by the word “percent”.

Examples:

1. 98% - Ninety-eight percent

2. 66% - Sixty-six percent

FRACTIONS
Cardinal number - a number indicating/ denoting quantity. (Example: One, two, three)

Ordinal number - a number defining the position of something in a series. (Example: First, Sixth, Ninth)

Rule: Say the top number (numerator) as cardinal number, followed by the lower number (denominator) as
ordinal number + “s”.

Example:

1. 2/7 - Two - sevenths

2. 3/6 - Three - sixths

3. 2/ 32 - Two thirty- second

4. 23/32 - Twenty- three thirty second

Exceptions to the rule (for the lower number or denominator)

For 2 / 3 / 4 - It is read as: 2 (half), 3 (third) and 4 ( quarter)

Examples:

1. 1/4 - One quarter

2. 3/4- Three quarters

3. 1/2 - One-half

4. 1/3 - One third

5. 2/3 - Two-thirds

Mixed Fraction

Read mixed fraction by stating the whole number first followed by the word “and” and then the fraction:

Examples:

1. 4 1/4 - four and One quarter

2. 23 1/2 - twenty-three and one half

Numerical Expression
SPEED
Rule: Read speed as number and the abbreviation in full meaning.

1. Examples:

1. 200 mph - Two hundred miles per hour

2. 150 kph - One hundred fifty kilometers per hours

3. 2 mps - 2 meter per second

WEIGHT
Rule: Read weight as numbers and abbreviation in full meaning.

Examples:

1. 42 kg - Forty-two kilograms

2. 55 lbs - Fifty-five pounds

PHONE NUMBERS OR TELEPHONE NUMBER


Rule: Read a phone or telephone number as individual numbers. It’s recommended that you put a stop or
pause after 3 or 4 numbers.

Examples:

1. 222- 565-4585 - Two two two - five six five - four five eight five

2. 09 - 128 - 654- 811 - Zero nine - one two eight - six five four - eight one one

DATES
Rule: Read the numerical dates according to the given format. Different countries use different format for
date. You can read it numerically or in words.

If the format is MONTH/DAY/YEAR

Example:

1. 01/30/2001 - Zero one / Thirty/ Two thousand one OR January thirty two thousand one.

If the format is DAY/MONTH/YEAR

Example:

1. 12/12/2012 - Twelve / Twelve / Two thousand twelve

It can also be read as Twelve/ Twelve / Twenty twelve OR 12th of December two thousand twelve

TEMPERATURE
Rule: Read the number + “degrees” and then temperature.

Examples:

1. 60° F - Sixty degrees Fahrenheit

2. 60° C - Sixty degrees Celsius

HEIGHT
Rule: Read height in this order if you are using ft and in

• Number + Feet then inch /s

But if you are using cm then read in this order

• Number + centimeter/s

Example:

1. 5’5 ft - Five feet five inches

2. 165 cm- One hundred sixty-five centimeters

MONEY
Rule: Read the number fi rst then the currency. If smaller amount is included like cents, express the bigger
amount and then the currency and lastly the smaller amount.

Examples:

In dollars

1. $56 - Fifty-six dollars

2. $45.50 - Forty-five dollars and fifty cents

Other currency

1. ¥5,000- Five thousand yen

Note: Native speakers often just drop the words dollars and cents.

Examples:

1. $56.80- Fifty-six eighty

2. $197.40- One hundred ninety-seven forty

ORDINAL NUMBERS
Rule: We use ordinal numbers when we are expressing the day of the month or a position in a group. Most
numbers end in “th” except “fi rst” , “second” and “third”.

Examples:

1st First

2nd Second

3rd Third

4th Fourth

5th Fifth

6th Sixth

7th Seventh
