Question 1 [CLO-3, PLO-8] (10 Marks)

Write a brief answer to the following questions.

a) Explain why safety considerations for the milling process are so important in the manufacturing process?
b) Explain the environmental health and safety issues in lathe machining processes.

An orthogonal cutting operation is being carried out under the following conditions: 𝑡𝑜 = 0.2 𝑚𝑚, 𝑡𝑐 = 0.4 𝑚𝑚, width
of cut = 10 mm, 𝑉 = 4 𝑚/𝑠, 𝑟𝑎𝑘𝑒 𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒 = 20𝑜 , 𝐹𝑐 = (𝑹𝒆𝒈 × 𝟏𝟎) 𝑵, and 𝐹𝑡 = (𝑹𝒆𝒈 × 𝟒) N. Calculate the
percentage of the total energy that is dissipated in the shear plane for the innovative turning machining process.
