\ MCDONNELL DOUGLAS Harpoon is designed for deployment on surface ships, aircraft, submarines, and ground-based installations. Launched from standaft ranges in excess of 67 nautical miles, Harpoon provides enhanced survivabil- iy for valuable launch platforms. Harpoon is providing new dimensions in fepower and acouracy forthe U.S. Navy, US. Ait Force, U.S. Coast Guard, and many ales. ‘The Harpoon Weapon System consists of the missle, launcher and a Command Launch System (CLS). The CLS can be a stand-alone system such as the a Harpoon Shipboard, Harpoon Aircraft, and the Encapsu- {ated Harpoon Command and Launch Subsystems, or its function can be integrated into an eteaf, ship, or submarine fre contol system. ‘This mut platform flexibility and ease of installation have resulted in the seletion ofthe Harpoon Weapon ‘System by cost-conscious military services throughout the world, The missile system provides total nteropera- bilty aoross numerous platforms; therefore itis very atracve when support costs are considered. ‘As prime contractor forthe Naval ir Systems Command (NAVAIR), McDonnell Douglas Missile Systems Company (MDMSC) has been responsible for development and production of Harpoon since mid-1971 ‘continuous planned product improvement program has resuted ina series of misile and CLS performance im- provements to meet new threats, AGN-84E SLAM, the imaging infrared (IIR) variant of Harpoon, was developed to provide standoft range agains and and selective ship targets with pinpoint aoouracy. ‘SLAM uses many Harpoon compo- Ta aS An effective all-weather, sea skimming, anti-ship missile with over-the-horizon range in excess of 67 nautical miles. nents and the same logistics support system to maxi- rnize commonality and interoperability. The latest Har- ‘oon active radar variant, AIRGM-84F, designated Block 1D, is two feet (0.9m) longer and 200 tbs (29 kg) heavier than ARRGM-84D Harpoon Block TC. Block 1D doubles the range of Block IC and provides a reatack capabilty to counter the evolutionary threat. Harpoon has demonstrated exceptional relay in fight test and has had a 100% suocess rate in combat launches. ‘The Harpoon Weapon System is deployed world- ‘wie with fl logistic support available from 15 weapon stations. Harpoon maintenance and logistos are based ‘on the “ound of ammunition” concept. Buil-in-Test (IT) is avallabe o operating units to assess status ofthe missile, and command and aunch subsystems. Weapon station support equipment includes the Missile Subsys- tem Test Set (MSTS) for automated test and faut isolation. Depot supports provided at MDMSC in St Charles, Missouri ak Io maids The guidance system provides al-weathor capably and supetor performance in electronic warfare environments. A three-as,strap-down aitude refer cence assembly plus a general purpose cial computer and a radar ameter are used for midcourse guidance, and a frequency-agl,J-band seekers used for terminal guidance. In combat operations, various targeting information may be accommodate, including radar, sonar, ESM, thid party, and periscope inputs Target data can be inserted into the Harpoon uidance system either automaticaly or manually priorto launch. Various missile launch modes, ‘waypoints, sodker search pattems, and terminal maneuvers are available to enhance target selectivity and mission success. WARHEAD ‘The wathead is a 500 pound, biastfragmentation, high explosive unitary warhead. Delayed fuzing is ‘employed to permit warhead penetration of the ship's hull SUSTAINER SECTION The sustainer section consists of a Teledyne CAE 4402 turbojet engine, cast aluminum flush inlet, a sealed fuel tank with JP-10 fue, two siver-inc batteries, and the missile wings, CONTROL SECTION The contol or boatal section supports the four con- {rol fins and the electromechanical actuators for each, BOOS For deployment from submarines, ground-based in- stalations, andsurface platforms, Harpoon empioysa solid rocket booster to accelerate the missile o cruise veloc. The booster contains a solid propellant which produces an average thrust of 12,000 pounds for approximately 2.9 seconds. A boosterassisted misslis launched ata me- cium elevation angle and follows a balisti trajectory. ‘Aterthe boosters expended it separates rom he missile. \When Harpoon i launched from ships, ground ased installations and submarines, the turbojet engine tarts automaticaly after booster separation Fr i- sunched Harpoon, the booster isnot usd the turboet ngine fies on command or automaticaly depending on peed and altude of the launch aircraft, Using the MGU rnd deta fom the radar alimter the missile flies at the ‘piu height forthe prvaling sea state. Missile intialzaion and launch can be ‘accomplished via a Harpoon Aircraft Command-Launch Control Set, (HACLCS) for martime patrol aircraft such as the P-8 and F-27. High performance combat aircraft, suchas the FIA-18 and ‘A$, use CLS functions integrated into the aircraft avionics. Other specialized air launch systems include the Harpoon Interface ‘Adapter Kit (HIAK) fog F-16 and an upgraded HACLCS for CN-235 and other new candidate platforms, Ship Launch Virtually ll ship instalaions use a Harpoon Shipboard Command and Launch Control System (HSCLCS) or MK-13 Tartar Launcher and Canister. Various canister configurations (hick wall, Grade B, and ight weight) are availabe to meet specfc weight, space, and protection requirements. The latest HSCLCS AN/SWG- ‘1A(V) provides graphic displays and automatic engagement planning o optimize Harpoon performance. The computer-based Harpoon OperatorTeam Training System (HOTS) provides shore- based HSCLCS training. Submarine Launch For submarine launch, Harpoon i installed in a buoyant capsule which is fred from the submarines topedo tubes and glides tothe surface, Upon broach ing the surface, capsule sections separate andthe missi's booster ignites, launching the missle into the ‘same trajectory used in surface launches. The Encapsulated Harpoon Command and Launch System, federated systems (submarine fre control system Intefaced tothe Harpoon Data Processor) or integrated fire control systems, such as the USN MK 117, ate used to inialze and launch Harpoon, Ground Launch ‘The Harpoon Coasial Defense ‘System (HCDS) uses Grade B canisters and the HSCLCS AN'SWG- ‘AV for planning engagements and launching the missile.
