Anne Frank was a young Jewish girl who lived and died during
the Holocaust. In June, 1942, Anne, the youngest daughter of
the Frank family, celebrated her thirteenth birthday. One of
her gifts was a diary which she named Kitty. Less than a month
later, the Frank family hid from the Nazis for two long years in
a secret place at the back of a warehouse. Friends brought them
food and news from the outside. During that time, Anne kept
the diary in which she did not only write about the horrors of
the war but the everyday problems of being a teenager.
Anne’ last diary entry was August 1, 1944. The German
police raided the apartment on August 4 and sent its occupants
to concentration camps. The only survivor was Anne’ father,
Otto Frank. He received the diary from employees who found it
on the floor. In 1947 the diary was published in Holland.
Anne Frank’s diary is one of the best-loved books, and rightly
so. It is beautifully written and gives an innocent voice to the
millions of anonymous Jews who suffered and died under the
Nazis occupation.
