Frequently Asked Questions
About Solar
SOLARFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SOLAR
Can | save in my electric bill
when | install solar in my house?
Yes! The monthly savings are dependent
on the capacity of the grid-tied solar PV
system to be installed and the daytime
household consumption.
Packages offered by Solar Philippines are
designed to generate savings of up to
60% of the homeowners’ monthly
electric bill. But it is also possible to zero
out the bill - by increasing the solar
capacity — given that the house has
enough rooftop space forthe solar
panels.
Can solar be installed
every house?
No. Before solar is installed in a
residence, Solar Philippines conducts @
free site assessment to check the
structural integrity, ago, and space of the
roof and any shadow that may be casted
‘on the solar panels. Moreover, ideally,
the rooftop should be able to last
another 25 years which is the optimum
service life of the solar panels and facing
south to maximize solar harvest.
How much is the solar panel?

The price of each solar package depends on the system capacity.
The size of the solar PV system is determined after sufficient data
on the household's electricity consumption is gathered by a
representative from Solar Philippines. See details below.

How does solar work?
Ina grid-tied solar PV system, there are
three important components: the solar
panels, the inverter, and the grid or, in
ie ee of the Greater Manila Area,
feralco.
The solar panels harvest the free energ
coming from the sun and comes into We
inverter as DC and out as AC. This
electricity can already be used by the
appliances in the household. It is worth
Noting that this kind of solar PV system
‘works only when itis connected to the
grid, hence “grid-tied.”FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SOLAR
Which appliances can I connect to
solar? Would it cause damage to
my appliances?
Every one of them can be connected to
solar: air-conditioner, washing machine,
electric fan, television, lights, iron, et
cetera. But no, it would not cause any
damage to appliances. With an inverter
included in the system, which converts.
DC to AC, the electricity entering the
appliances is matched and safe for use.
Does solar werk even when it
rains? Or at night?
Grid-tied solar PV systems generate
electricity when there is enough sunlight.
Iti raining, they stil harvest solar
energy as long as the sun is still up.
Light, instead of temperature, is the one
being collected.
Meanwhile, at night, there is no light to
harvest so the household automatically
gets its power from Meralco.
How secure are the solar panels
on my rooftop? | am concerned
during typhoons.
Solar Philippines uses German-quality
mounting structures and performs
industry-standard solar installations. Ever
since, the company has not received any
report from a homeowner about their
solar panels being flown away by the
strong winds brought about by the
typhoon.
What is the maintenance cost
of solar?
Because there are no batteries to
maintain in grid-tied systems, the only
maintenance required is in the solar
panels.
‘The homeowner needs to make sure that
the solar panels are clear from debris
and dust. But since the rain can easily
wash this off, this is no longer a big
concern. Stil, an annual system cleaning
and checkup is recommended by Solar
Philippines.
How long will the solar PV
system last?
Based on current design, Solar
Philippines’ panels can last up to 25
years. Meanwhile, the inverter can serve
its purpose up to 15 years at most.
BATTERIES AND STORAGE
Does the system include batteries?
There is no backup for grid-tid systems. Only the
Grid or Meralco is required for the system to be
turned on.
The solar PV system with the batteries is called
off-grid system. This type requires heavy battery
maintenance on top of the battery replacement every
2 to 3 years due to discharge cycles.
That means when the gece is out, | also
do not have electricity
Correct. That is grid-tied systems’ greatest
disadvantage.
But versus sponding on battris in an area where the
grid is already stable, like Meralco, it doesn’t make
sense to spend on storage. The frequency of
brownouts is considorably iow in the Greater Manila
rea.
‘So what will be the use of solar if such is
the case?
Grid-tied systems are designed for savings, not
backup. itis not advisable to place batteries in
households connected to stable grids.
Moreover, in terms of cost, the homeowner has to
spend 50% more if he or she goes off-grid with
Buyback period up to fifteen years or even more,
‘Whereas with gric-tied systems, the homeowners can
expecta return of investment between 5 to 7 years
only.FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SOLAR
What happens to the electri
from solar that | do not use?
Itcan be fed back to the grid through an
incentive called net metering.
Net metering is that mechanism which
allows the homeowners to sell excess
solar harvest to Meralco. Itis completely
legal, indicated in the Renewable Energy
Law or RA. No. 9513 of 2008.
For net metering to be activated,
documents have to be filed and
processed before the local government
unit and Meralco.
Who will process my net
metering application?
Solar Philippines offers the Premium
Package which gives a hassle-free
experience to homeowners who want to
install solar with net metering,
If this package is availed, the net
metering application is already covered
by the company, other than the longer
warranty on the Solar panels material
defect and different inverter brand.
Why would | install solar in my
house? It is too expensive.
Install solar for the savings. For the free
‘energy. For the environment.
SAVINGS
Instead of using electricity from Meralco
during the day, the homeowner can use
solar instead with its lower rate per kWh
if coming from the grid and free if it’s a
rooftop installation. Other than that, this
source of power already offers some sort
of protection from the rising Meralco
rates — get solar today and enjoy
savings in the future.
FREE ENERGY
Solar is the best renewables option
because the sun beams free energy
during the day. Why not use this to our
advantage?
ENVIRONMENT
Moreover, getting solar is a great way to
help our environment especially at a time
where coal-based power is proven to
cause global warming. Itis also said that
installing solar is equivalent to planting
about 63 trees per year.
How does net metering work?
Upon net metering application, Meralco
will vist and check the solar PV system of
the homeowner. The electric meter will
either be replaced by a bi-directional
meter or added with another meter to
measure the export electricity.
Once net metering has been activated,
the electricity sold to Meralco is
reflected on the monthly electric bill as
negative. This is automatically deducted
to the total amount paid. Savings!
There is no need for a switch for net
metering to work. All the excess solar
harvest automatically goes to Meralco
which is measured by the electric meter.
Does Solar Philippines sell
streetlights and other solar
products?
So far, none. Currently, the priority of the
company is in the residential, industrial,
and utility-level solar projects.
