It does
not consider if there is any good to give the money to people
who do not starve to prevent them from beginning to starve.
When I buy coffee, I keep the workplace running. So there is
another person, who otherwise would have no means to live
and would starve, whom I prevent very bad things from even
happening. Now, the pond metaphor. I am standing at a certain
distance from the pond and there is a kind of trap, say slippery
surface. If a kid runs over that surface, they would certainly fall
into the pond and drown. I stand close enough to the pond to
save the drowning kid from drowning but there is another kid
running in. I cannot save two kids in the pond from drowning,
let's assume that.
If I can reach for one, I cannot reach for the other one. So
here's the dilemma: should I stop the running kid from falling
into the pond and let the one who is already there drown, or
should I save the drowning kid, knowing that the other one will
inevitably fall in and drown. And I think this argument is valid:
the proof is that in our society we do spend a lot on luxuries and
there is no famine observed. We do not spend enough on
charity and famine is observed in some areas. Is there,
therefore, a moral obligation to buy a coffee even if you could
prepare it yourself? Is it something you can do if you like but
you do not necessarily must do? I think that by the very same
argument as in Singer's paper, you HAVE TO buy coffee, and
bread, and stop to bake your own. And hire the cleaner instead
of running up and down the corridor with your vacuum. You
have to spend as much as you can - on whatever really. It does
not matter on what. It may also be a charity - please go donate.
But the only true immoral thing is to keep money and not spend
them. It is like stopping blood from running.
