Elements of Language
Learning the elements of language also provides many other benefits
including greater academic achievement, greater cognitive development, and
more positive attitudes towards other languages and cultures. Simply put,
language learning is necessary for students to effectively function in the modern
global marketplace.
Linguistics have five elements known as Phonetics, Phonology,
Morphology, Syntax, Semantics, and Pragmatics).
Phonetics deals with sounds of speech and how we produce it.
Phonology is the study of the properties of the sounds systems and the
principles that govern the way in which speakers of different languages
organize speech sounds to express meanings.
Morphology is the study of words and how they are formed.
Syntax is the set of rules, principles, and processes that govern the
structure of sentences in a given language, specifically word order.
Semantics is the study of meaning in language. Pragmatics is considered
to be the wastebasket of linguistics. Why so? Because pragmatics is the
study of LANGUAGE IN USE.
Pragmatics is the use of language for communication - so we can
understand each other. This is also the study of the rules of
conversations.
