Chemical nature of alkaloids
Alkaloids are an assembly of naturally occurring chemical composites, which
typically comprise basic nitrogen atoms. They may also contain some neutral or weakly

acidic compounds. Few synthetic compounds are also considered as alkaloids too .
Solanin:
Occurance:
Solanine is a glycoalkaloid poison found in species of the nightshade family within the
genus Solanum, such as the potato (Solanum tuberosum), the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), and
the eggplant (Solanum melongena). It can occur naturally in any part of the plant, including
the leaves, fruit, and tubers.

Solanine was first isolated in 1820 from the berries of the European black nightshade (Solanum
nigrum), after which it was named.

Physiological effects:
 Hallucinations,
 loss of sensation,
 paralysis, fever,
 jaundice,
 dilated pupils,
 and hypothermia
Chemical nature:
Solanine is a toxic glycoalkaloid known to accumulate under certain conditions in potato plant,
sprouts and tuber in levels which, if ingested, may cause poisoning in humans and farm animals.
