Writing Hangeul
Here is an illustration of the prescribed stroke order for writing all the Hangeul Vowels.

Here is an illustration of the prescribed stroke order for writing all the Hangeul Consonants.
Course Packet 01
01 0233
You have observed that each Hangeul vowel letter consists of a basic long vertical or
horizontal stroke, from which other shorter strokes are drawn. On the basis of their shapes,
we can group all the Hangeul vowel letters into three groups as illustrated above. Do you still
remember how Hangeul works?
The basic principle is this : Hangeul syllable always begins with a consonant letter.
When the vowel in the given syllable is vertical, it is written to the right of the syllable-initial
consonant, and when it is horizontal, it is written below the consonant. If the vowel is a
mixed one, it is written in such a way as to fit under and to the right of the consonant. It is
important to observe this principle, otherwise your writing could appear very unnatural and
difficult to read. Let us look at some examples.
01 0233
Do you know that learning Korean alphabet pronunciation will be easier through
assimilation? It is a way of remembering the Korean character by using similar sounds you
already know in your naïve language. Click this link https://www.90daykorean.com/korean-
pronunciation/ / where the table of vowels and consonant are provided together with an
audio on how each character sounds and also an insight of the use of Romanization for
pronunciation.
Vowels such as ㅖ (ye) and ㅒ (yae) are pronounced but don’t have a strong sound.
For example, the syllable 폐 (pye). The “y” is pronounced in the syllable but when
pronounced naturally, it seems like it’s omitted so it sounds like “pe” instead of “pye”.
Certain consonants change to a “t” sound when they are in the batchim position.
These consonants are ㄷ,ㅈ,ㅅ,ㅆ,ㅌ, and ㅊ.. For example:꽃 = [꽅] – ends in “t” instead of
“ch”맛 = [맡] – ends in “t” instead of “s”
If you see a single syllable that ends in ㄷ,ㅈ,ㅅ,ㅆ,ㅌ,ㅊ, then you can pronounce the
final consonant as “t.”
Syllable ends in a consonant in the batchim position, and the next syllable begins
with the letter ㅇ. In that case, the consonant sound gets moved to the beginning of the
following syllable.For example: 먹어 -> [머거] ,십이 -> [시비]
Additionally, when the final consonant of a syllable is ㅎ, it will become silent in the
world. Like this: 좋아 -> [조아]
01 0233
Only when the last consonant of the syllable is ㅇ does the consonant sound not
switch over to the following vowel. For example: 종이 -> [종이]
Course Packet 01
6. Double consonants: ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ, ㅉ
The twin consonant is basically the same as the single consonant, except it’s said with
emphasis. To pronounce double consonants correctly, all you need to do is tense up your
tongue and pronounce the sound with a little more force. Just double it up!
7. Aspirated consonants: ㅋ, ㅌ, ㅊ, ㅍ
When pronouncing them, try to get your k, t, and p as strong as you can. The ㅊ, which is ch
in its basic sound, is quite identical to their English counterparts, especially as they are often
used specifically in loan words.
One of the common changes you’ll get with pronouncing the ㄹ letter is when it’s paired next
to ㄴ. If it’s ㄹ + ㄴ, then it will become ㄹ + ㄹ.
The purpose of the change is to make the pronunciation more natural and easy. Below are the
most common assimilation types you will run into.
Note: ㅎ precedes or follows ㄹ/ㄱ/ㅂ/ㅈ/ㄷ – > ㅎ disappears, and the consonant sound
becomes aspirated while ㄹ becomes pronounced as “r.”
Syllables that end with two consonants in the final position, such as 닭
01 0233
a.When the next syllable begins with a vowel, the sound of the latter of the consonants
simply gets transferred to the following syllable.
Course Packet 01
The different levels of respect in Korea depend on the speakers’ ages and societal status
closeness to each other.
Formal (존댓말)speech is used towards people you don't know or aren't close with, people
who are older than you and people you are higher than your own social standing such as
your boss. It is as simple as adding 요 or 입니다 on the end of a sentence or word.
Informal/Casual 반말 speech can be used towards close friends, people who are younger
than you and family. It is as simple as removing the 요 . Take for instance
죽다= 죽어
가다= 가
주다= 줘
기쁘다= 기뻐
잡다= 잡아
아름답다= 아름다워
Therefore, this is the rule that you should consider whenever you are conjugating verb
formally/casually . You simply drop the 다 from the verb stem and then add the appropriate
verb endings. The correct verb endings to be used are determined by the final or last Hangeul
after dropping the 다 from the verb stem. Here is the illustration.
Verb 하다 — to do
01 0233
Present
Casual/Informal
Course Packet 01
Verb + 아 or 어
Example 가다-가
Formal
Example 가다-가요-갑니다
Past
Casual/Informal
Verb + 았어 or 었어
가다-갔어
If the last vowel isn’t one of those two, you add 었어요
Example 가다-갔어요-갔습니다
