Rules for writing summary from Passage

Rule 1:Title
In Summary Writing, no title can be given for Summary. Providing Title for Summary is
improper, it is normal to reduce marks.
Rule 2:From Passage
Cannot be copied exactly from the given passage while summarizing. If there is no other
way but to copy at all, two things can be done.
· Using synonyms of the words in the passage.
· If the sentence of the passage is simple, change it to complex, compound or such. Or
Superlative, Comparative can also be changed.
Rule 4:Sentence Connectors
Use of connectors should be increased. If there is an opportunity to make one sentence
by adding connectors between multiple sentences, it should be done. Rules of Sentence

Rule 5:Avoiding Examples
If there is any type of Example in the given Passage, it should be omitted while writing
the Summary. But if the summary loses its original meaning due to the omission of
examples, then as many examples can be mentioned as are absolutely necessary.
Rule 6: No Analysis
Analysis of any part of the passage or the whole passage or any kind of personal
comment cannot be done. If there’s any analysis in the passage, its main point should
be mentioned in the summary.
Rule 7:Definition and Reasons
Passage should be followed by descriptive sentences and how and why answer
sentences in summary. By doing this, it will be possible to explain the content of the
whole passage in few words. And your summary will be much better.
Rule 8:Tense
If the passage is in Past or Future Tense, then Summary can be written in that tense.
But normally it is better to use Present Tense while writing Summary. And whichever
Tense is used, the full answer must have one Tense.
Rule 9:Narration
No direct speech can be kept. Summary should be written in Indirect Speech.
Rule 10:The passage is about
Many people start with The Passage is about+ main topic of the passage while writing
a summary. This cannot be done. Nor can it be started with words like ‘The passage
deals with’.
Rule 11:Paragraph Number
The entire summary should be written in one paragraph. Can’t do more than one
paragraph.
