Zueignung poem by Hermann von Gilm Opus 10, No. 1. Composed 1885. First published 1887, Joseph Aibl Verlag, Munich. Strauss changed the title to “Zueignung” from the poet’s “Habe dank.” Opus 10 was the first group of Strauss’ songs to appear in print. “Zueignung” was orchestrated in 1832 by conductor Robert Heger, and in 1940 by che composer. Strauss’ orchestral version, which has many changes in meter, melodic line and text, was dedicated to Viorica Ursuleac. He acknowledged her role as Helena in Die agyptische Helena by changing the text from “Heilig, helig” to “du wunderschne Helena.” Because of this and other considerable alterations in Strauss’ orchestral version, Hleger's is the orchestration in current use. None of these alterations to the song affect the original composition for voice and piano, presented in this edition, Original key: C major.
