Goal of the Program
o The main goal of Centering pregnancy is to reduce infant mortality rate

o Decrease rates of preterm birth

• As well as racial disparities in preterm birth

o Decrease rates of low birth weight

o Increase breastfeeding

o Help with spacing out pregnancies

History of Centering Pregnancy
o Opened in October 2015 under the care of Dr. McClusky

o In Youngstown and all over there is a high rate of infant mortality and Centering Pregnancy plans to
decrease this by educating the expectant mom and support person about pregnancy, birth, and the
postpartum period

o Focus is on mom and care giver

o They opened a new location in 2019 on the south side of Youngstown

What are some qualifications?
o Anyone can join a group for Centering pregnancy
o The only reason a mom may not be able to participate is their work schedule

o There are 10 sessions throughout their pregnancy

o The expectant mothers are grouped with other moms who are due around the same time

o For expectant moms who can’t do the group sessions there are also one on one
sessions these are usually held on Wednesday

o The patient must use one of their providers


o They are opening to more providers now as well

o The expectant mom may use this no matter where she lives
o No matter the county or state she lives in
What is the most important/ rewarding part of
Centering for you?

o Anna told me that patient care, self care, and empowerment are
the most rewarding and important part of her job

o After having been to Centering Pregnancy and working with


Anna you can tell that she really cares for her patients and
makes them feel like family, you can also tell these moms really
trust Anna and the staff at Centering Pregnancy

o It is important to empower the new moms, and Anna does just


that with not just the moms but everyone she meets
How long can the mom be in the program?

o During the pregnancy, the expectant mom will attend 10


sessions, or the one-on-one sessions and the moms will keep
coming up to two years after delivery at a minimum

o 6 out of 10 moms will usually come back with in 1-1.5 years

o They will never cut off or turn a mom away

o The moms can come back for each pregnancy they have

o Centering Pregnancy is a very nonjudgmental area


What are some of the services you offer?
o They are through mercy health and offer services for the mom and support person
o Smoking cessation
o Drug counseling
oAlcohol counseling

o They partnered with Walmart to provide the new moms with a post partum kit for after they deliver

o Along with the group and one-on-one sessions they are able to me with the midwife or doctor and
hear the baby's heartrate and have fundal height checked

o They also offer necessities for free for the mom and baby
o Diapers and wipes
o Car seat
o Pack and Play
How often do
you see moms
with PPD? • Anna told me that she doesn’t see a high
incidence of Post Partum Depression among her
moms

• She believes as long as new moms follow up and


answer the phone calls they do very well
