Testo 340 flue gas analyzer

The testo 340 has been specially designed for industrial flue gas analyses. It can be used to determine the different gaseous
components of the flue gas.

The testo 340 can be equipped with up to four gas sensors in various combinations and is the ideal hand-held device for short-term
measurements lasting up to two hours.

The testo 340 also offers both new and tried-and-tested features.

The robust, compact design combined with the great choice of different gas sensors makes the testo 340 the ideal 'tool' for
commissioning, service and maintenance work, as well as for monitoring-related measurements on:

 Industrial burners

 Stationary industrial engines

 Gas turbines

 Thermal processes

Four Individually configurable gas sensors

As users often conduct measurements on different combustion systems, the requirements on the measuring instrument can also differ
from one system to the next (e.g. measurement parameters, gas concentrations etc.).

The testo 340 is fitted as standard with an O2 sensor. Three other (pre-calibrated) gas sensors can be individually configured at any
time. Users can select from the following sensors:

 CO (H2-comp.
 COlow (H2-comp.)
 NO
 Nolow
 NO2
 SO2.

As the adjustment data is stored on the small circuit board on the sensor, users can independently change or upgrade the sensors
on-site.
This guarantees excellent flexibility when adjusting the analyzer to changing applications and measurement tasks

The cross Sensitivity of gas sensors

The flue gas components depend on the fuel used and the combustion system. For example, high CO and NO concentrations can arise
with gas engines and high SO2 concentrations can arise when burning coal (depending on the type).

Depending on the gas sensor, the flue gas components have a positive or a negative influence (cross sensitivity) on the measuring
signal. For example, the CO (H2-comp.) sensor is cross sensitive to SO2 and NO and the NO sensor is cross sensitive to SO2.

Testo gas sensors have a special integrated filter that prevents the transverse gas from flowing through the sensor. Test gas can be
used to monitor the filter's functionality/efficiency.

If the filter material has already been exhausted (saturated) with the previous sensors, the entire sensor must be replaced (sometimes
before the sensor's actual service life expires)
Gas sensors with transverse gas replacement
The testo 340 is the first device to use two gas sensors with a new form of transverse gas filter.

 CO (H2-comp.) sensor with replacement filter

o Blocks transverse gas SO2 and NO
o Service life: 170,000 ppm hours

 NO sensor with replacement filter

o Blocks transverse gas SO2
o Service life: 120,000 ppm hours

If the filter material has been exhausted, the user can simply
replace the filter. This provides key benefits for users.

The replacement filters are available as accessories

Zeroing the sensors

When zeroing the testo 340's sensors (rinsing with fresh air), the gas sampling probe can remain in the flue gas duct because an
internal valve in the gas duct automatically switches to the rinse/dilution pump.

This has the following user benefits:

 Usage errors and inaccurate measurements caused by incorrect zeroing are minimised. If this function did not exist and the
gas sampling probe remained in the flue gas duct during zeroing, the sensors would be zeroed with the flue gas. The sensor's
new zero point would therefore be equal to the flue gas concentration in the flue and an inaccurate offset would be created.

 The gas/air function (using soft keys) makes it possible to zero the sensors during measurements. This prevents the sensors
from being damaged when subjected to high gas concentrations for long periods
The Measuring range extension [dilution]
The testo 340 has an automatic measuring range extension
function (dilution) that makes it possible to conduct measurements
at (unexpectedly) high gas concentrations.

There are two measuring range extensions:

1. Single dilution (always installed in the device)

Measuring range extension sensor slot 2 with
dilution factor 5 (5x) for e.g. gas sampling probe
CO, COlow, NO, NOlow or SO2

2. Optional or as an upgrade: dilution of all sensors

Measuring range extension of all sensors
with the dilution factor 2 (2x)

Customer benefits of the measuring range extension:

 No additional sensors and costs for different
measuring ranges

 Automatic sensor protection to prevent

overloads

 Measurements can still be made at high gas

concentrations

Info
The dilution factor indicates the number of portions of ambient air that
are mixed with the flue gas. The measuring range extends
correspondingly. If measuring range extension is activated, the sensor
is not subjected to any greater strain from high gas concentrations than
it is from low gas concentrations. This ensures the sensor has the
longest possible service life

Integrated impact protection

The broad range of measuring points and applications in which the testo 340 is used subject it to mechanical and thermal loads.
During transportation, e.g. when lifted or lowered on the ladder, the analyzer is often knocked against the railings or other objects.

As most of our customers (e.g. service companies) operate on an international level, it must be possible to safely transport the analyzer
in its packaging or in the tool case. The small, compact design and robust housing are indispensable in this regard.

A 'holster' is therefore integrated in the testo 340's housing to protect it against bumps, dirt and rough working conditions

The controlled measurement gas pump

Strong negative or positive pressures in the flue gas duct can affect the accuracy of the measurement result.

The testo 340 therefore has an automatically controlled measurement gas pump (diaphragm pump).
This means that in a pressure area of -200 mbar to + 50 mbar in the flue gas duct, the pump regulates the testo 340 to a constant pump
flow of approx. 0.62 l/min.

If the negative pressure in the flue gas ducts increases, for example, the pump automatically increases its speed to counteract the
negative pressure. Conversely, it decreases its speed in the event of positive pressure

This function has the following benefits:

 Constant pump flow in the flue gas duct within a

pressure range of -200 mbar to + 50 mbar

 Constant pump flow regardless of the hose length

>> hose lengths of up to 7.8 m can therefore be used

 Constant pump flow regardless of the condition of the

gas sampling probe's filter
Automatic Monitoring of the condensate trap
The condensate trap in the upper section of the testo 340 functions
independently of the operating position and can therefore be operated
in the following two positions:

1. Horizontal, i.e. with the back of the device held in the hand or
on the floor

2. Vertical, i.e. the retaining magnet on the rear of the device

independently holds the device on metal surfaces

The automated fill level monitor prevents condensate from entering

the gas duct. This is important for measurements lasting > 1 hour as
the user does not need to remain by the analyzer for the duration of
the measurement.

Function: two electrodes that measure the change in resistance
determine whether the condensate trap is full. Ten minutes after the
visual warning (LED flashes red), the gas pump deactivates
automatically

Testo-specific lithium ion battery

A special lithium battery with a capacity of 2,200 mAh is used for the testo 340 and offers customers the following benefits:

 Approx. six hours measuring time without recharging

 No memory effect, i.e. no capacity is lost through the battery being regularly charged and exhausted

 Increased service life through additional rechargeable batteries with a charger station (optional)

 Simple battery replacement without plug

 The remaining battery life is shown on the display (in %)

The Interfaces
The testo 340 has three communication interfaces:

1. Standard USB 1.1

The USB cable can be used to connect the testo 340 to a notebook/PC and the easyEmission software can be used to
configure and operate the testo 340 as well as to read, conveniently process, archive and manage measurements.

2. Bluetooth® 2.0 (optionally available)
The Bluetooth® remote connection provides a wireless connection to the testo Bluetooth® printers and enables direct
communication with the notebook/PC over a distance of up to 10 m (free field). Readings and settings can therefore be
conveniently, wirelessly transmitted to the notebook/PC for storage and analysis.

3. IR/IrDA
The print data is wirelessly transmitted via an infrared interface. Visual contact is required between the testo 340 and the
printer

Service friendliness and instrument diagnosis

The testo 340's condition can be checked at any time by pressing
the 'i' button.

This instrument diagnosis has the following benefits:

 No unexpected analyzer failures during measurements

 Users remain fully informed of the quality and condition

of the wear parts

 Foresighted, organisable readiness for measurements

If wear parts need replacing, they can be accessed by loosening the screws on the service cover (reverse).

Users are therefore able to independently replace the affected parts on site (e.g. battery, gas sensors or replacement filter)

Testo Probe Concept
The gas sampling probes can be used, to remove flue gas from the flue and transport it to the analyzer.

It must not come to a distortion of the measured gas.

The Testo probe concept was developed in that manner, that at high temperatures, aggressive condensate, high concentrations of
dust or mechanical stress a reliable and accurate measuring is possible.

The choice of the right probe is therefore an absolute must for achieving specific and reproducible readings.

It must also be possible to adjust the probe to the specific requirements of the different measuring points. Three different probe systems
are therefore available for the testo 340:

1. Standard sampling probes

2. Special gas sampling probes for conducting measurements on industrial engines

3. Robust probe systems for industrial use

The modular, standard gas sampling probes

The modular standard gas sampling probe is not only available for different temperature ranges (500°C/1,000°C) but also in different
lengths of 335 mm and 700 mm.

The probe tube with pre-filter is used for dusty flue gases.

The hose has a default length of 2.2 m.
If a larger gap needs to be bridged between the analyzer and the sampling point, the hose extension of 2.8 m can be used.

To replace the probe shaft, it is simply attached to the probe handle and snapped into place.

The modular probes have the following features:

1. The filter in the probe handle is easy to replace

2. All in one connection: gas, pressure and temperature input

3. Faster probe shaft replacement

Gas sampling probes for measurement at industrial engines

These gas sampling probes have been specially developed for conducting measurements on stationary industrial engines (e.g. gas
engines or diesel engines) and have the following functions:

1. The probe is fully constructed from metal to prevent the radiated heat (from the flue gas duct) from melting the handle. The flue
gas temperature of gas engines is about 650 °C.

2. The probe has an additional shaft for regulating positive pressures. In the case of stationary engines, positive pressures of up
to 80 mbar can develop in the flue gas duct, e.g. through catalytic converters. , To protect the measuring instrument the
positive pressure can be released into the atmosphere by opening the seal.

3. The probe with the preliminary filter is particularly suited to conducting measurements on stationary diesel engines. The
sintered preliminary filter prevents particles from entering the testo 340.

4. If necessary, a thermocouple with a heat protection grip can be integrated into the probe as an accessory. Due to the heat
protection grip the risk of burns at the handle is minimized. Through the thermocouple it is possible to perform a temperature
measurement parallel to the exhaust gas measurement
Industrial flue gas sampling probes

The industrial flue gas sampling probes are suitable for the specific use in harsh environments.

These probes are suitable for all applications where high temperatures > 1,000°C, high dust loads as well as aggressive condensate
and mechanical loads occur.

For Servicing and maintenance work on industrial burners and furnaces

The testo 340 offers multiple technical functions for safe and efficient commissioning, tuning, efficiency-optimisation and
troubleshooting when servicing industrial burners:

 Direct display of air ratio and efficiency

All relevant combustion and calculation parameters for optimum tuning are clearly shown in the display.

 Measuring range extension and automatic sensor protection

When commissioning burners or carrying out measurements on unfamiliar systems, very high concentrations can occur
unexpectedly.
In cases like these, the measuring range extension is automatically activated. This protects the sensor, as the load placed on it
is no higher than at low concentrations.

 Always ready for use – even in rough daily work

The integrated impact protection prevents damage to the analyzer.

Support for inspection and tuning work on stationary industrial engines

The versatile combination options of the different gas sensors in the testo 340 offer you the highest level of flexibility for measurements
on stationary engines:

 Separate NO- & NO2 measurement

The real NOx value is measured with the sensor combination of NO and NO2. In gas engines, the NO2 component of the NOx
value can fluctuate greatly, so the separate measurement of each of the gases is necessary to correctly record NOx values.
 Measurements even at high CO concentrations
At unexpectedly high concentrations (up to 50,000 ppm), the dilution of the sensor with fresh air allows measurements even
when the engine status is undefined, without negatively influencing the sensor's service life.
 Special engine probes as accessories
The engine probes are highly heat-resistant and are specially designed to compensate different pressure conditions, for
example in measurements before and after the catalytic converter.
 Engine-specific parameters
The most important parameters for industrial engines such as O2, CO, NO, NO2, NOX and Lambda can be displayed
simultaneously
