(Department of Botany, Smithsonian Institution, Wash- ington, DC 20360), New species of Hansteinia (Acanhaceae) from Colombia and Ecuador. Britfonia 37: 203-208, 1985.—Two new species and a new variety, Hanstelnia jamesonil from Pichincha, Ecuador and H. magdalenensis and H. magdalenensis var pilosa from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Mara, are described, illustrated, and compared with H. charitopes, their closest relative During the course of routine identifications of Acanthaceae from South Amer- ica, I have found two undescribed species of the genus Hansteinia. The genus, named for Dr. Johannes Hanstein, was described by Oersted in 1854 with a single species, H. gracilis, from Costa Rica. Since then, ten additional species have been described in this genus, eight from Mexico and Central America and one each from Colombia and Boiivia. Hansteinia jamesonii Wasshausen, sp. nov. Related to H. charitopes Leonard (1958), H. magdalenensis differs markedly in the shorter (6-11 cm long) elliptic to narrowly ovate leaf blades, the purple, 56.5 mm long calyx and the much broader (7-12 mm) corolla tube. The leaf blades in H. charitopes are oblong-lanceolate, 10-16 cm long, the calyx 4 mm. long and the corolla tube is barely enlarged to 8 mm (Table 1). ‘The term variety is not necessarily employed here in the widely used sense of a local population that is morphologically distinct and occupying a restricted geographical area. Rather, the term here is used for a variation whose precise nature is not yet clearly understood. I suspect from previous field observations that the degree of morphological deviation observed here is probably due to some ecological differentiation. Additional field observations and collections are nec- essary to resolve this taxonomic problem. magdalenensis var. pilosa Wasshausen, var. nov.
