This two-year study examines the attitudes and beliefs of Black/African Americans who smoke menthol
cigarettes regarding menthol cigarette sales restrictions in the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.

Ms. Glenda Phillips-Smith referred 12 potential


participants for our study. She is a Deputy
Probation Officer II for the Los Angeles County
Probation Department, a member of Sigma
Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated, and a
member of Coalition of 100 Black Women (Los
Angeles Chapter). She earned a Master’s in
Public Administration Leadership and
Management.

In the new year, we will be continuing our data collection and in our data analysis phase.
We look forward to disseminating preliminary findings.

Dr. Karen Beard presented at last year's American Public Health Association Conference in
Denver, Colorado (October 2021).
