Anna Hazare (full name: Kisan Bapat Baburao Hazare) is a soldier, lone survivor in his unit in the 1965 Indo-Pak war, Anna dedicated his life to the well being of the society. He is especially recognized for his contribution to the developm ent of Ralegan Siddhi, a village in Parner taluka of Ahmednagar district, Mahara shtra and his efforts for establishing it as a model village. He is a bachelor, with no possessions, no bank balance and lives in a temple. He has fasted on sev eral earlier occasions to dismiss the corrupt ministers and officers. What is the Jan Lokpal Bill ? The Jan Lokpal bill is a draft anti-corruption bill which will have the power to prosecute politicians and bureaucrats without government permission. The Jan Lo kpal Bill is designed to create an effective anti-corruption and grievance redre ssal systems and to assure that an effective deterrent is created against corrup tion and to provide effective protection to whistleblowers. The bill was drafted by Justice Santosh hegde, Prashant bhushan and Arvind Kejri wal. The salient features of Jan Lokpal bill: * An institution called Lokpal at the centre and Lokayukta in each state wil l be setup. * Like supreme court and Election commission, they will be completely indepe ndent of the governments. No minister or bureaucrat will be able to influence th eir investigations. * Cases against corrupt people will not go on for years. In any case, the in vestigation has to be completed within a year. * The loss that a corrupt person caused to the government will be recovered at the time of conviction. * If any work of any citizen is not done in prescribed time in any governmen t office, lokpal will impose financial penalty on guilty officers, which will be given as compensation to the complainant. * What happens if the Government appoints corrupt people as Lokpal members? That wont be possible because its members will be selected by judges, citizens a nd authorities through a completely transparent process. * What if some Lokpal members becomes corrupt? That wont be possible because the entire functioning of the Lokpal will be transparent. Okay, i understand what Jan Lokpal bill is but what is Anna Hazare upto these da ys? The Lokpal Bill drafted by the government has failed to pass the Rajya Sabha for 42 years. The first Lokpal Bill was passed in the 4th Lok Sabha in 1969 but cou ld not get through in Rajya Sabh.

Anna Hazare has gone on a indefinite fast at JantarMantar in New Delhi starting 5t h April 2011. He waited till 4th April for the governments response.
