Q.1 An unbalanced single phase three-wire system has loads ZAN = – j5 Ω , ZNB = 5 Ω and a load
ZAB = 3 + j4 Ω. The resistance of two lines (aA and bB) is 1 Ω each and that of neutral wire (nN) is 2 Ω.
Let Van = Vnb = 120 ∠0o V rms.
a. Determine IaA, IBb, IAB and InN. (6)
b. Determine the total average power supplied by the sources and total average power being absorbed
by the loads. How much power is lost when lines have resistance > 0? (4)
c. Determine the complex power supplied by the source & absorbed by the loads as well as Power
Factors of source and loads. (4)
d. What is the transmission efficiency of the system? (1)

Q.2 (Y-Y connection) A balanced three-phase three-wire system with positive phase sequence has
balanced Y-connected load with ZP = 3 + j4 Ω. The phase voltage of the source is Van = 120 ∠0o V:
a. Let RW = 0.5 Ω. Determine the total complex & average power drawn by the load and the
total power lost in the line resistance. What is the PF at the source and at the load? (4)
b. Let Rw=1.0 Ω. A Loss-less conductor is installed between nodes n & N and loads are
unbalanced: ZAN = 8 Ω, ZBN = 4 + j3 Ω and ZCN = 5 - j5 Ω. Find the Complex and Average
Power supplied by the source and absorbed by the loads. What is the PF at the source and at
the load? (6)

Q.3 (Y-Δ connection) A balanced three-phase three-wire system with negative phase sequence has
balanced Δ-connected load with ZP = 6 + j8 Ω. The line voltage of the source is Vbc = 120 ∠120o V:
a. Let RW = 0.5 Ω. Determine the total complex & average power drawn by the load and the
total power lost in the line resistance. What is the PF at the source and at the load? (5)
b. Let RW = 1 Ω. If the total complex power supplied by the source is 15 kVA at PF = 0.8
leading, find ZP? (5)

Q.4 A balanced three-wire three-phase source is connected to two loads. Load-1 is an unbalanced ∆-
connected load with ZAB = 6 - j8 Ω, ZBC= 10 Ω and ZCA = 3 + j3 Ω. Load-2 is an unbalanced Y-connected
load with ZAN = 5 Ω, ZBN = j10 Ω and ZCN = 3 - j4 Ω. There is no neutral wire connected to the loads. Let
Van= 100∠0o V rms.
a. Draw the circuit diagram of the source and loads, clearly indicating all impedances, phase
voltages & line voltages and phase & line currents. (3)
b. Determine Line currents and phase currents in the loads and total line currents from the
source. Check that the sum of all line currents is zero. (6)
c. Determine the complex power and average power supplied by the source and absorbed by
the loads (4)
d. Determine the PF at which source and loads are operating. (2)
