1. General System Information Figure 1: Conventional roof outlet

1.1 Introduction

Wavin QuickStream is a siphonic roof drainage system. Whereas

in conventional gravity roof drainage systems gravity is the only
driving force for discharge, in siphonic systems a gravity induced
vacuum will boost the drainage function. This is achieved by
preventing air being sucked into the roof outlets during heavy
rainfall.

A specially designed roof outlet with an air baffle and anti vortex
vane only allows the intake of water and prevents the ingress of
air, so allowing full-bore flow to be achieved (see figures 1 & 2).
At full-bore flow, the difference in height between the roof outlets
and the rainwater discharge level is utilised to gain the energy
that will increase the flow velocity of the water in the pipework.

The combination of elimination of air in the pipework and the

increased flow velocities, result in a considerable increase
in discharge capacity, leading to a significant reduction of the
pipe dimensions.

Siphonic drainage technology has become the standard in

industrial and logistic applications and many other areas.

Shorter building time
The concreting work for the foundation slab is less
dependent on siphonic drainage, since very few downpipe
connections are required inside the industrial building.
Lower insulation costs
Smaller pipes also mean lower costs for insulation at the
same time.

2.1.6 Only Use 45° Bends and 45° Tees

Bends of 90° have a higher flow resistance than two 45° bends.
The design of the system is based on using two 45° bends
instead of one 90° bend unless specified differently. Installing 90°
bends is consequently not allowed unless specified by Wavin
(see Figure 7). Pipe diameter must never reduce in the flow direction in
horizontal pipes.
For the same reason only 45° Tees are allowed instead of 90°

Installation of eccentric reducers in vertical pipes should be

positioned with the level side facing the wall. This allows for ease
of installation, particularly when fixing rails and clamps are used.
Furthermore, it is more effective during priming of the system
(see Figure 11).

Figure 11: Install eccentric reducers in a vertical pipe with the 2.1.8 Only Install Expansion Joints Where Provided in
level side facing the wall The Design

Once installed, the Wavin QuickStream system is subjected

to temperature changes and dynamic loads. Any oscillation or
vibration, originating from partly filled pipes, must be effectively
damped. Wherever possible it is strongly recommended to make
all joints tensile resistant.

In some countries, it is common practice to provide each 5-meter

pipe-length in the vertical downpipe with an expansion joint,
while in other countries no expansion joints are used and fixing
clamps are directly installed to the wall. It is not good practice to
install an expansion joint in horizontal collector pipes. In those
cases where expansion joints are applied, appropriate fixing is
required. Guidance is given in section 5.3.

In general, Wavin does not advise the practice of absorbing axial

displacements by expansion loops or flexible legs in a Wavin
QuickStream PE system, unless provided in the design proposal.

2.1.9 Do Not Connect Gravity Pipelines to The Wavin

QuickStream System

Any open (gravity) connection to a Wavin QuickStream system will

allow the intake of air and thus can severely impair the siphonic
function. Therefore, such connections cannot be allowed in the
design. Also, attention should be paid on not allowing extensions
at a later date. Extensions to the building will require its own
dedicated rainwater discharge system.

3.4.5.2 Fastening Options for The Pipe System, Figure 25: Single-point hanger Fin kg

Depending on The Maximum Suspended Load

One important planning task is to assess the resulting loads on

trapezoidal sheet metal roof. The weight of pipework in operation
generates a load (weight loads on the trapezoidal sheet). The
permissible load is specified by the responsible planning office
Table 6 shows fastening options for various roof loads, for both
single and two point hangers.

Single point hanger

Weight loads occur depending on the pipe weight and distance
between fasteners. These resulting loads at a maximum distance
between fasteners (2m) are shown in Table 5. If loads exceed the Figure 26: Two-point hanger
maximum weight load of the trapezoidal sheet, e. g., the distance
between fasteners can be reduced (see Figure 24 Distance “T”).
This reduces the weight load per suspension point. m
.1
≥1
kg
Fin
Two-point hanger
In a similar way to the option of reducing the distance between
fasteners, two-point hangers additionally spread the load to
two points using a transverse channel. The weight of the pipe
remains unchanged. However, the forces are spread over twice
the number of suspension points and thus halved.

Note single-/two-point hangers

The permissible weight load of trapezoidal sheets is often stated
in kg/point or kg/m2. The distances between fasteners for anchor
rail channels cannot be reduced arbitrarily. The roof is divided
into load squares (1m × 1m). Therefore mounting distances < 1m
would automatically expose the load square to the load twice.
As a consequence the distance between fasteners and the
distance between load distribution points (see Figure 26 “Two-
point hanger”) should never be less than 1.1m and must always
be coordinated with the appropriate planning office, as weight
loads always need to take work performed for other maintenance
groups into consideration (e. g., heating, ventilation).

4.3.8 Roof Outlet Accessories

4.3.8.1 Back Up Rings

Wherever a Wavin QuickStream roof outlet is required for an

emergency drainage system, it is necessary to adjust the storm
water inlet height to match the main drainage system. The back
up ring prevents water entering the emergency drainage in
case of normal rainfall. If a back up ring is used, the standard
compression sealing flange supplied as standard equipment is
not required. Replace the compression sealing flange with the
back up ring. There are circumferential height marks on the side
of the back up ring.

4.3.8.2 Heating of Roof Outlets

Wavin QuickStream roof outlets can be equipped with an

automatic heating system. A heating system prevents the roof
outlet freezing in case of sleet or snow. A built-in temperature
sensor automatically switches the heating element on if the
ambient temperature drops below +4ºC. The heating element
is installed between the base body and the thermal insulation
layer. Depending on the outlet temperature the heating element
automatically adjusts the heating power to match the external
environment without requiring separate external control. It is,
however, still recommended to install a separate external on/off
control.

Technical data:
Heating power: 10W
Supply voltage: 230V/~50Hz
A/C power supply
Long connection cable: 1.5m

4.3.8.3 Vapour Barrier with Drainage Connection

If the on-site roof insulation cannot be laid due to rain, the Wavin
QA vapour barrier with drainage connection prevents delays in
the installation work. When installing the vapour barrier with a
230mm

drainage connection, the vapour barrier lower part, supplied as

standard equipment is not needed. Replace the vapour barrier
lower part with outlet drainage connector. This means that
installation of the piping can start without any delay. The spigot
end of the moulded part can be connected to the pipe system
using an electrofusion coupler. When using the vapour barrier
with drainage connection (see image right) the connecting pipe
must always be secured against dropping.

4a. Always cut the pipe ends square
The use of a PE pipe cutter is recommended. You need a
smooth, square cut without swarf.

Use a clean, lint-free cloth for cleaning. Keep the weld zone
clean after cleaning.
10. Again mark the insertion depth on the insert part (it may
no longer be visible through scraping)

Step 9 Step 10

Pressure testing the pipelines:

There are generally no standards requirements for rain water
pipes inside buildings. If you do want to pressure test the pipe
system, you can seal the pipe system below the cleaning section
opening with a bladder test head. Then fill the pipework with
water and perform a hydrostatic pressure test.

11. Also clean the inside of the electrofusion socket with a 5.2.2 Butt Fusion Welding

The butt fusion welding procedure incorporates the following

15 steps:

1. Check environmental conditions

When the outside temperature is below 5ºC and/or during
rainy and windy conditions, special precautionary measure
have to be taken to ensure dry and sufficiently warm
welding conditions.
2. Check welding machine is in good functional order
At least the following issues should be checked:
temperature, alignment, play of the moving parts, smooth
13. As a general rule, always perform welding as per the movement of the moving parts, electrical connections,
instruction manual for the welding tool cutting machining plane (sharpness).
14. After welding, you check the weld indicators to see
whether the sealing pressure was adequate Step 2 Step 3
If the indicators are protruding and you performed the steps
as described, you can assume a professionally implemented
joint. If the weld is unexpectedly interrupted, the material
must cool completely before re-welding. Welding can be
repeated once only.

4. Check temperature heater plate on 210ºC
5. Cut pipe to required length
Note: take into account that in the welding process a few
millimetres of pipe will be consumed. Best practice is to
use a rotary pipe cutter. The pipe ends are then square and
free from burrs. If a saw is used, it is advised to use a spare
clamp as a sawing guide. Such cut pipe ends must be de-
burred before placing in the welding machine.

If not correct either re-clamp pipes (alignment) and/or repeat
trimming. After re-clamping it is necessary to trim the pipe-
end again with a planer.

14. Inspect weld bead for evenness E

Uneven weld beads indicate incorrect alignment or out of
roundness. Large weld beads could be caused by either too
high a heater temperature and/or too high a welding force.
A small weld bead could be caused by a too low a heater
temperature and/or too low a welding force. In both cases
the weld should be rejected due to reduced strength.
15. Remove welded joint from the welding machine after
cooling time is elapsed
The joint needs to be kept free from any loads for 5 minutes
after the cooling time has elapsed.

5.3 Installation of Expansion Joints

Expansion joints are push-fit sockets with a rubber seal.

Expansion and contraction in the pipe system is absorbed
by axial displacements in the sockets. Normally expansion
joints are mostly located in the vertical downpipes. In special 15/30º

circumstances, if no other options remain to absorb thermally

induced displacements, expansion joints can be positioned in
horizontal collector pipes.

For a good functioning of the expansion joints, follow these

instructions:
min 4mm

1. Prepare positions of fix-and sliding brackets D

Expansion sockets must always be configured as a fixed-
point. That means that all other fixing points must be sliding
brackets. Step 2 Step 3
2. Chamfer pipe end
Chamfer angle should be approximately 15º and chamfering
length should be minimum 4mm.
3. Mark insertion depth
Use the insertion depth for the ambient temperature during
installation according to the values mentioned in table 9.
