Brand name: Curazid® Mechanism of Action:
Forte Isoniazid is highly active
Generic name: Isoniazid against Mycobacterium
+ Pyridoxine HCI tuberculosis which it

Antitubercular Agents concentrations of 0.02-0.2
Route: PO mcg/mL. Isoniazid may

Although it is rapidly
bactericidal against
actively dividing M.
tuberculosis, it is
considered to be only
bacteriostatic against
semi-dormant organisms
and has less sterilizing
activity than rifampicin or
pyrazinamide.
Side Effects:
 Clumsiness or
unsteadiness.
 nausea or
vomiting.
 numbness,
tingling, burning,
or pain in hands
and feet.
 yellow eyes or
skin.
Indication/
Contraindication
Indication:
Primary treatment of
pulmonary and
extrapulmonary
tuberculosis. It is
administered with other
antituberculous drugs
usually including rifampicin
and pyrazinamide.
Prophylaxis of tuberculosis
in high risk subjects.
Isoniazid is given in the
initial and continuation
phase of short-course
tuberculosis regimens.
Contraindication:
Isoniazid is contraindicated
in patients who develop
severe hypersensitivity
reactions, including drug -
induced hepatitis; previous
isoniazid-associated hepatic
injury; severe adverse
reactions to isoniazid such
as drug fever, chills,
arthritis; and acute liver
disease of any etiology.
Nursing Responsibilities
• Follow 14 rights of
medications
can cause jaundice
• may cause peripheral
neuropathy, seizures,
hepatitis
• patient should avoid
high amounts of
tyramine (pickled meats,
aged/smoked meats,
alcohol, exotic/aged
cheese)
• monitor liver function
tests
• complete full course of
therapy (6-12 months)
• often used in
combination with
Rifampin
