True, whether you want a basic work truck, some decidedly sportier personal transportation, an out-and-out perfor- mance machine or anything in between. The Chevy® family of hardworking, hard-playing full-size pickups is a gathering of high quality, high stan- dards and high style. As shown to your left, the 1990 family includes the new-generation C/K (two-wheel-drive/four-wheel-drive) Series, presented in detail on pages 2-33 of this brochure, and the RIV (two-wheel-drive/four-wheel-drive) four-door Crew Cab and Bonus Cab Series (available Nov. Additional Information To begin with, Chevy C/K (2WD/4x4) Series Full-Size Pickup is the best-engineered pickup in Chevrolet® history. The hardest-working (and most fun-loving). The best-built. And (according to many C/K buyers) the greatest-looking. The Chevy C/K also offers an impressive selection of gasoline- and diesel-powered models in 1/2-ton, 3/4-ton and 1-ton series (designated 1500, 2500 and 3500), all available in 2WD or 4x4 (designated C and kK), with a wide choice of payload and towing capacities, plus your choice of Regular-Cab or Extended-Cab, with short box (6’ -ft.) or long box (8-ft.). And every C/K Series Full-Size Chevy also comes with standard power steering, standard power front disc/rear drum brakes, a rear-wheel anti- lock brake system (operates in 2WD mode only), and standard all-season steel-belted radial tires. , Beyond that, the ‘90 C/K has various ® refinements over the ’89. More stan- dard content (in the best Chevy “value-added” tradition). Richer op- tional trim levels. Significant engine upgrades. New optional appearance and handling packages. And distinc- tive new models like the 454 SS (the ‘cams ats only half-ton pickup in the land with a mens tothe cKsgasaine | 7-4 Liter [454 Cu. Liter Diesel for ‘90 boasts 150 as Perhaps the most powerful argument for choosing Chevy in ’90 is the powerful engine under its handsome hood. The 4.3 Liter (262 Cu. In.) Vortec V6 continues to be one of the biggest standard WHAT'S GREAT ABOUT THE ’90 C/K PICKUP engines in a full-size half-ton pickup. And—new for ’90-there’s a heavy-duty emissions version stan- dard in heavy-duty C/K2500 Series models that boasts 150 net HP at 4000 RPM, and 8.6:1 compression ratio and a big 3-inch exhaust. The standard transmission for C/K1500-2500 mod- els is a smooth-shifting, Getrag-licensed 5-speed manual with overdrive. It features a floor-mounted shift lever with smooth, short throws and a light- weight aluminum housing. Every C/K Series Full-Size Pickup has a standard The oath sitn Catan rear-wheel anti-lock (RWAL) brake system (opera- | tronsmssin wi overaiv is tional only in the 2WD mode). The RWAL system | etic‘ wsonaves-sec features a computer and a sensor in the transmis- | %{sveedransmisson win ‘B r sion that are designed to monitor rear-wheel speed. Insta-Trac allows shifting from freewheeling 2WD to 4WD High and back at any speed—no need to get out of the cab and lock the hubs manually. Integrated with a torsion-bar independent front suspension, the 4x4 Full-Size Chevy delivers excellent tire-to-terrain traction, high ground clearance and easy-riding comfort. InNsin ARIE Whether it’s a 2WD or 4x4 model, every C/K Chevy Full-Size Pickup is painstakingly designed and built for hard work and hard play. What's more, the 90 models are manufactured to stricter tolerances than ever, for reduced water and dust intrusion. Every CK also has double-wall steel construc- tion in its doors, front fenders, cab rear upper panel, hood, PICK- | everett sasmer's chevy was 5 EES! up box sidewalls | monster-tuck challenge Dovble-wattsteel constuction | and’ tailgate. How solid? That question was answered extremely well at the 1989 Renegades/TNT Monster Truck Challenge, the biggest competition in mon- ster trucking. In this relatively new form of off-road racing, = Everett Jasmer’s “Chevy © USA-1”” a one-of-a-kind, 1200-horsepower behemoth built on a standard K3500 Chevy Pickup frame, outperformed Ford “Bigfoot” and all other monster- truck competitors. Of significance, most other com- petitors used specially reinforced, custom frames. Buta strong frame is only one element of the well-built Chevy CiK. Other elements include the exterior sheet metal, which is galvanized (coated with zinc) on both sides (except the cab roof panel) as an effective anti- corrosion measure against rust formation or rust- through. The entire truck is also immersed in a phosphate wash, which enhances the adhesion of electrically charged ELPO primer to interior cavity surfaces and crevices. Phosphate immersion also maximizes the adhesion of paint to all exterior surfaces. In short, the anti-corrosion measures taken in the building of a Chevy C/K are so complete that application of additional rustproofing is not required after you buy your new Chevy. The CIK’s top-coat paint is applied using state-of-the- | mutieramerwin sae art technology known as the base-coaticlear-coat | imwesneptopte cot process. One more very important thing covers this truck: Chevy's best warranty coverage ever. The GM Bumper to Bumper Plus Warranty, a 3-year/50,000- mile security blanket for every 1990 Chevy light-duty truck, covers almost everything from front to back, road to roof. Leste The charts which begin to your right clearly indicate the required and recom- mended options for tow- ing light, medium or heavy trailers with your new C/K Full-Size Pickup. The charts also provide Regular Production Op- tion numbers (RPOs) to make ordering easy for you. However, you should first take note of all the standard equipment that helps make the '90 C/K such a worthy towing vehicle. 9A Delco Freedom heavy-duty battery with 630 cold-cranking amps (dual batteries with 570 cold-cranking amps in diesel-powered models). 0 An 85-amp Delcotron generator. GA 1"-diameter front stabilizer bar. © Power front disc and power rear drum brakes, integrated into a rear- wheel anti-lock brake system. © Power steering. © Extra-capacity fuel tank: 34-gal. (35-gal. on diesel-powered models, and 25-gal. on all short- wheelbase models). © Standard steel-belted radial tires that are up to the trailering job. optional larger tires are not required. As the charts show, a Heavy-Duty Trailering Special Package (RPO 282) is recommended or required, depending on the C/K series (/e-, ¥s- or 1-ton) and the size of the trailer to be towed. The package includes: 2 A weight-distributing platform hitch receiver. 2 A7-wire wiring har- ness. (See page 43 for further description and a color code to help you with installation.) 9 A transmission oil cooler (RPO V02). © Heavy-duty front and rear Shock absorbers (1500 Series only). 10 An engine oil cooler (RPO KC4) for gasoline- powered models. For towing a light trailer (up to 2000 Ibs. gross weight), the C/K Pickup's optional rear step bump- er is an appropriate dead- weight hitch, and requires a 1’'-diameter hitch ball, available as an accessory from your Chevy dealer. For towing a medium trailer (up to 4000 Ibs. gross weight, and with a tongue weight of 400 Ibs. or under), a 2’-diameter hitch ball (also available from your Chevy dealer) is required for the C/K’s rear step bumper. For towing a heavy trailer (up to 10,000 Ibs. gross weight), a weight-distrib- utiag platform hitch receiver is required. It's included in RPO Z82— Heavy-Duty Trailering Special Package—or you can buy just the hitch from an outside supplier. Ifyou plan to “fifth wheel’ a trailer with agross weight of up to 14,000 Ibs., please take special note of the following: There are two types of pickup fifth-wheel hitch installations. The first has the fifth wheel ona bar mounted.on brackets attached to the frame and the bed of the pickup and sup- ported by braces on the fender housings. NOTE: Diagonal brac- ing between the brack- ets Is required, The kingpin is mounted on the trailer. With the second type, the king- pin is mounted in the bed of the pickup box, and the fifth wheel is mounted on the trailer. This type of hitch is supplied and installed by the trailer manufacturer. Fifth-wheel trailers have a greater percent- age of their weight on the king-pin (tongue load) than a conven- tional trailer. Because of this fact, greater at- tention must be given to the maximum allow- able payload and GVWR. The charts on page 33 show the maximum allowable payload and GVWR for each application, which should not be exceeded. The weight of any additional equipment and all pas- sengers must be sub- tracted from the payload weight shown to determine the avail- able kingpin load. You will have to splice a wiring harness into your C/K Pickup’s electrical system to activate your trailer lights and other electrical systems. A 5-wire wiring harness is sufficient for light trailers and can be purchased from an outside supplier. For medium and heavy trailers, a 7-wire wiring harness is required. It's included in RPO 282 (Heavy-Duty Trailering Special Package) or can be purchased separately from an outside supplier. The heavy-duty 7-wire wiring harness necessary for fifth-wheel trailering can be purchased from an outside supplier. When using the trailer- ing charts, note that, although C/K Pickups can be purchased with manu- al transmissions for tow- ing purposes, Chevrolet strongly endorses the 3-speed and 4-speed automatic transmissions. Additional trailering information is provided on pages 42-43. It includes a chart on dealer-installed trailer hitches, plus aGCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) chart for deter- mining powertrains and rear axle ratios. The C/K trailering infor- mation provided in the following charts is for recreational applications. For commercial C/K trailering information, see pages 30-31 of the 1990 Commercial Vehicles & Motor Home Chassis catalog.
