was no one else at home. I was too scared to move from where I was standing.
I screamed and shouted as I felt scared. I could not see anything. Slowly, I calmed
down. I realized that I could see even in the dark. After that night, I stopped being
scared of the dark.’

‘Go from here!’ said a lion angrily to a bee that was buzzing around his head. But
the bee did not stop.
‘Do you think,’ the bee said angrily to the lion, ‘that I am afraid of you because they

The next moment the bee flew at the lion and stung him sharply on the nose. Mad
with rage, the lion struck fiercely at the bee, but only succeeded in tearing himself
with his claws. Again and again the bee stung the lion, who was roaring terribly. At
last, worn out with rage and covered with wounds, the lion gave up the fight.
The bee buzzed away to tell the whole world about his victory. But instead, he flew
straight into a spider’s web. Thus, the bee who had defeated the king of the forest
came to a miserable end, the prey of a little spider.

Once Birbal arrived late for a function and Emperor Akbar was angry.
‘My child was crying and I had to make him quiet,’ explained Birbal.
‘Does it take so long to calm down a child?’ asked Emperor Akbar. ‘It appears you
know nothing about bringing up children. Now, you pretend to be a child and I
shall act as your father and I will show you how you should have dealt with your
child. Go on. Ask me for whatever he asked of you.’
‘I want a cow,’ said Birbal.
Akbar ordered a cow to be brought to the palace.
‘I want its milk. I want its milk,’ said Birbal, in the voice of a small child.

A hare was very popular with the other animals in the jungle who all claimed to be
her friends. One day, she heard the wolves following her. She hoped to escape them
with the help of her friends. So, she went to the horse and asked him to carry her
away from the wolves on his back. But he said that he could not help her as he had
important work to do for his master.
She then went to the bull. She hoped that he would attack the wolves with his
horns. The bull replied: ‘I am very sorry, but I have some important work to do.
I am sure that our friend the goat will do what you want.’ The goat, however,
feared that her back might get hurt if she carried the hare. She asked the hare to go
to the ram.
So she went to the ram and told him the case. The ram replied: ‘Sorry, my dear
friend. I have to take care of my own life as wolves eat sheep as well as hares.’ The
hare then went to the calf. He said that he was unable to help her. He did not like
to take the responsibility as so many older friends who were stronger had refused to
help the hare. By this time the wolves were quite near. The hare quickly ran away
and luckily escaped.

Read the following story and attempt the questions given.
Once there was a man named Gopu who was travelling through a forest with his
friend. He had seven slices of bread with him. Suddenly, they heard strange sounds
from the forest. Gopu’s friend ran away but Gopu kept sitting under a tree. Seven
little fairies lived on that tree.
Gopu waited for his friend. He shouted, ‘Come back! There is nothing to fear!’ He
was feeling hungry. He shouted, ‘I am going to eat the seven of them.’
The fairies thought that Gopu was going to eat them. They flew down from the
tree and said, ‘Please don’t eat us. We will give you a magic bag. When you finish
eating the seven slices of bread, you will find seven more in the bag.’
Gopu took the bag and went home happily. The greedy man thought that he made
a mistake by saying, ‘I am going to eat the seven of them.’ He decided to go under
the same tree and say, ‘I am going to eat the twenty of them.’ He again stood under
the tree and said the words. The fairies quickly changed the seven slices of bread
into big stones. The fairies did not fly down this time and Gopu got stones in place
of bread.

There was a boy who lived with his grandmother. Every day, his grandmother
took out a candy from a small jar and gave it to him. The boy used to ask for more
candies. But his grandmother always said, ‘No, I can’t. I’ll give you one candy each
day. That’s it for today. I’ll give you another one tomorrow.’ After saying so, she
used to put the candy jar on a high shelf.
One day, the grandmother went out for weekly shopping and the boy wanted
to eat another candy. He climbed on a chair to take down the jar from the shelf
with difficulty and put his hand in it after opening the lid. Since he wanted to eat
all the candies, he grasped them greedily. But he got into trouble as he couldn’t
get his hand out of the jar because the mouth of the jar was too narrow. Soon his
grandmother returned home to find her grandson crying with his hand stuck in the
candy jar.
She laughed and said to the boy, ‘Oh dear! Being greedy will always lead you into
such trouble!’

Read the following story and answer the questions that follow.
A long time ago, in the depth of the ocean there lived a young sea turtle. His
neighbour was a big sea snail. Both of them were quite the opposite but they had
one thing in common – they were both scared of the king of sharks.
One day, when the sea snail was boasting about his shell as usual, along came the
king of sharks. The sea snail didn’t see this because he was looking at his wonderful
shell.
Suddenly, the king of sharks made a loud roar and kicked the sea snail high into the
water.
‘Ahhh!’ screamed the sea snail, ‘help me!’
The sea turtle heard the little cry. He quickly went to help the sea snail who was in
danger.
Just as the king of sharks was about to take a big bite out of the sea snail, the sea
turtle kicked the king of sharks in the nose with his feet. The king of sharks cried
out loud, and then dozed off to sleep, for that is what happens when you kick sharks
in the nose.
‘You saved me! But my shell has become flat when the king of sharks kicked me!
Here you can have it! I don’t want it anymore! I can get a new one,’ said the sea
snail gratefully.
‘Thanks,’ the sea turtle said excitedly.
From that day on, the sea turtle always had his beautiful shell. He was impressed
about it but never boasted. That’s how the sea turtle got its shell.
