There wasn’t much rain in 1871 in Chicago, USA, and the city was dry. The 8th October
was a very windy night, and a small fire started. According to a famous story, a cow kicked
a lamp, the lamp fell and it started the fire. Because of the dry, windy weather, the fire
grew quickly. Soon, it was very big. Chicago’s firefighters ran to the fire. People saw the fire
and left their homes. They were terrified!
Then, something horrible happened. The firefighters’ water stopped. There wasn’t any
water! The big fire was going from house to house and street to street. It was burning
thousands of houses and the firefighters couldn’t stop it. Finally, something lucky
happened – it started to rain! Rain fell on the fire and the fire stopped.
People went back to their homes but there weren’t any houses there. About 90,000
people lost their homes. The fire burned 18,000 houses, shops, theatres, churches, hotels
and other buildings, and 300 people died.
