Ecclesiology is a theological study of the Catholic church about the church itself and
understanding as well as the nature and its mission. The word ‘ecclesiology’ comes from the
Latin word ‘ecclesia’ which means the gathering or assembly of the faithful, and ‘logos’
which means as the study, reason or discourse. In Catholic studies, ‘church’ is defined in two
meanings which are: the church as the structure or a place of worship, and the Church as the
people of God, us.
The church, as commonly known to all, is a physical structure where the laity gathers
to attend mass to praise and glorify God. But the church is way more than that perception. It
is more than just a foundation or a building. It is a sacred place where the sacraments given to
the people of God are, especially the Holy Eucharist which Jesus established. It is also where
the liturgy or the Word of God is proclaimed, where people are taught and encouraged to live
a holy life through Jesus Christ, and a communion that unites all the people of faith.
The Church also signifies the clergy and laity pursuing holiness in the midst of the
world. We, the descendants of God are the Church who are bound so closely to Him that we
can call it the Bride of Christ and Mystical Body of Christ on earth. We are the community of
believers who know that Jesus is the Lord, living a sacramental life, and who commit service
for the sake of the Kingdom of God. Each of us has a mission in life of the Church in which
we are called to be in service to one another just as how Jesus served us. Episcopal leadership
being solely defined by power has no place, since the power attached to the bishop’s office is
only given to achieve and guarantee the Church’s unity.
“One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church”. These four marks of the Church
indicate the essential features of the Church and her mission. The Church is one in a sense
that it is a united church open to all which has its basis in Jesus Christ. The Church is Holy
because it is the Body of Christ with Jesus as the head, and where the Church and her
sacraments help the faithful to become holy. The Church is Catholic or universal in which
role is to spread the Word of God universally across the world. And lastly, the Church is
Apostolic because the origins and beliefs of the Church started out with the apostles at
Pentecost.
The primary mission of the Church is to continue His saving mission. Thus, we, the
people of God, must also be proclaimers and examples of the Word of God. Each one must
walk all the teachings that Jesus taught us and be of service for others instead of being served.
We also have the responsibility to lead all men in full communion for the Kingdom of God.
Life here on earth is only temporary so we must make the best out of it by being a true
disciple of Jesus. The laity and the clergy must be united because all of us are the Church,
and without us, the Church of God wouldn’t exist.
