All of these rays travel in waves, and therefore
have a wavelength, amplitude, and frequency and
they travel at the same speed. They are different
due to their wavelengths and frequencies. Gamma
rays are the shortest and radio waves, the longest.
Shorter wavelengths such as X-rays carry more
energy than visible light, and visible light has
more energy than radio waves.
‘This statement is incorrect. The sun gives off other
forms of EMR, such as infrared and ultraviolet.
‘The sun gives off a considerable amount of UV
radiation, and prolonged exposure to UV can
cause skin cancer.
Radio waves, like any other form of EMR, will
reflect. These radio waves can be directed at the
sea's surface using a transmitter. A receiver can
then pick up the reflected radio waves. Since the
speed of the radio waves are known and the time
taken for the signal to reach the area and bounce
back is recorded, a simple calculation reveals how
far any icebergs are from the transmitter. If such
calculations are repeated, the iceberg’s path of
travel can also be determined.
Gamma rays are the best choice for cancer
treatment. They easily penetrate body tissues
Although gamma rays can cause cancer, small
carefully aimed doses can kill cancer cells.
Remote controls emit infrared radiation. Infrared
from the remote triggers action in the electronic
device. (Note: Many digital cameras and
camcorders are sensitive to infrared radiation. You
can show students the infrared radiation emitted
by a remote control by aiming the camcorder at it
while buttons on the remote are being pressed.)
X-rays cannot penetrate lead or thick metal walls.
Since long-term exposure to X-rays can cause
cancer, parts of your body that do not need to be
exposed are covered, and the X-ray technician
protects himself or herself as well.
