Improving Learner’s Performance in Mathematics

Through MaSIDLAK

(Mathematics Sustainable Instruction on Developing Learners Acquisition of Knowledge)

I.Context and Rationale

According to Rizhad Ashley (2005), it is important for students to learn to translate

mathematical expression and verbal problems into mathematical expression that can be worked

with. It is also important for the students to understand how to think critically and solve problem for

it is demanded in 1st century education in order to prepare pupils for global competitiveness.

According to Clemente and Battista, 1990, that Elementary Educators today need to make

sure their pupils are ready by the time they graduate elementary. Intervention, enrichment and

instructional materials were created to help make this a reality.

In mathematics, the teachers put a plan into place to not only help students understand

mathematical concepts, but also be able to quickly and accurately recall basic addition, subtraction,

multiplication and division facts. Mathematics instruction for many years has had classrooms that

used different methods of instruction that require different activities. Face to face learning

engagement of students and teachers within the school has been suspended due to the COVID-19

pandemic. This pandemic has paved the way to the implementation of Modular Distance Learning as

an urgent response to ensure continuity of education. The Philippines is in the process of adapting to

the new normal form of education at present, and continuous innovations of educators and active

involvement of other stakeholders are the driving force for its success. Hence, mastery of the four

fundamentals skills in mathematics was put at risk due to the type of learning modality the schools

are offering.
In Tagbina Central Elementary School, Modular Delivery of Learning is being implemented.

Records show that the overall MPS in Math for S.Y. 2021-2022 posted 74.88% which is the lowest of

all the learning areas and 27.97% of the Grade V pupils have not mastered the learning

competencies.

The teachers utilized varied strategies but there are still Grade V pupils who were not able to

master the skill especially in the four basic fundamental operation in math because of unavailability

of learning materials that can lead to mastery level.

With the situation mentioned above, MaSIDLAK (Mathematics Sustainable Instruction on

Developing Learner’s Acquisition of Knowledge) was to designed and improve the performance of

Grade VI pupils of Tagbina Central Elementary School this school year 2022-2023. With this

intervention, pupils learn more by answering a series of questions that range from easy to difficult.

This will be done through intensifying teachers’ instruction through teacher’s supervision and

guidance.

If found effective this will be cascade to the remaining grade VI pupils throughout the school

and maybe throughout the district. For the 3 rd and fourth grading period and even to all grade level

next school year.

This is an intervention program consisting of two main components. Allotting a 30 minute

period in the afternoon is a continuing instruction of the day’s lesson to sharpen their skill. Second,

the crafting and utilization of consumable work sheets and game materials. Such worksheets are of

three levels. For easy – “Kalingawan sa MathUtok ! ” (Have Fun!), for average – “
