LEARNING MODULE IN VALUES EDUCATION (Bible 1)
Second Quarter – Lesson 18

e
Let’s continue learning the story of Joseph in Egypt. We already
knew the story of his childhood on how he was sold into slavery, his life
as a prisoner until he became a governor in Egypt. And today we are
going to read the most important part of his life on how he reconciled
with his brothers and reunited with father Jacob after 17 years of being
away from them. Please read carefully and earnestly.

Dear God, Thank you for giving me a kind and forgiving

heart. Others may hurt me but I am willing to forgive and
show kindness to them. Amen.

It is important to forgive and forget if others commit mistakes

to us. God is happy to see us forgiving and loving to each
other.

Check the pictures that show kindness to others.

Faith to live by: in 1 Peter 3:8 says: “Finally, all of you, be like minded, be
compassionate and humble. If we are kind and humble we can easily
forgive others.

Most Essential Learning Competency

At the end of the lesson, you will be able to illustrate kindness to your
family.

Enabling Competencies
At the end of the lesson, you will be able to:
• Identify the characters and the event of the story; and
• Write and recite the memory verse given.
Performance Task: Poster that shows kindness

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:
How do you think Joseph felt when he saw his brothers again? Has your
brother, sister, or friend ever done something awful to you? Did you
forgive that person? Was it easy? Our story this week shows how
Joseph forgives his brothers. He believed that everything happened
because God has a reason.

Identify the character and the event of the story

“Joseph’s0 Family Reunited”

People came to Egypt from near and

far to buy grain because of the famine.
One day guards brought a group of
bearded, long robed figures to Joseph. The

Page 3
men filed in and bowed to the ground. Strange—he was so used to
shaved faces, white robes, and smooth white wigs worn in Egypt. Just then
men looked up.

Could it be possible? Were these men his brothers? These were the
men who had sold him. Were they still the same hard hearted men they
had been 17 years before?

Joseph watched his brothers closely.

Through the interpreter, he said roughly,
“You are spies! You have come here to
see whether the famine has made us
weak enough to invade!”

“Oh no, no, my Lord!” the brothers

stumbled over their words. “We are honest
men! We have come only to buy food!”

“We are 10 of 12 brothers. We are

sons of the same father. We live in the land of Canaan. Our youngest
brother is there with our father right now. And our brother is gone.”

“But Joseph said to them, ‘I can see I was right! You are spies! . . . As
surely as King lives, you will not leave this place until your youngest brother
comes here. One of you must go and get your brother. The rest of you
must stay here in prison. We will see if you’re telling the truth . . . then
joseph put them all in prison for three days.”

“On the third day Joseph said to them, ‘I am a God-fearing man. . .

if you are honest man, let one of your brother stay here in prison. The rest
of you go and carry grain back to feed your hungry families. Then bring
your youngest brother back here to me. If you do this, I will know you are
telling the truth. Then you will not die.”

“The brothers agreed to this. They said to each other, ‘We are being
punished for what we did to our brother.’

Page 4
“Then Reuben said to them, ‘I told you not to harm the boy. But you
refuse to listen to me. So now we are being punished for what we did to
him.’”

Joseph felt tears coming to his eyes. Were they really sorry? Hastily,
he left the room before they saw him cry. When he came back, he had
his stern face on again.

“You!” said joseph, pointing to Simeon. “You will stay.”

A servant tied up Simeon and led him away. “God be with you!”
cried the brothers anxiously after him. “We will be back soon!”

Secretly, Joseph told his servants

to put their money into the sacks with
their grain and to give them other
supplies for the journey too. He sent
them on their way and begun the long
wait.

When they returned home, the

nine brothers had a hard story to tell
their old father. “And not only does he
say what we won’t see his face again without Benjamin, but when we
opened our sacks—look! Here is all our money that we paid him! Now he’ll
think we robbed him too!”

Jacob put shaking hands to his face. “First, Joseph is gone. Now
Simeon. And you expect me to send Benjamin? Absolutely not. If I lose
him, too, I will die.”

The months passed by. “Still no food grew in the land of Canaan.
Jacob’s family had eaten all the grain they had brought from Egypt
again. Buy a little grain for us to eat.’

“But Judah said to Jacob, ‘The governor of that country . . . said,

“Bring your brother back with you. If you don’t, you will go down and buy
food for you. But if you refused to send Benjamin, we will not go. The

Page 5
governor of that country warned us. He said we would not see him if we
didn’t bring Benjamin with us.’”

Judah promised that he would watch over

Benjamin and bring him back safely. Jacob knew
they must have food, for the people in the camp
were starving. Jacob sent them, with double the
money, to buy more food. He also sent presents.

Then nervous men were ushered into the

governor’s presence. When Joseph saw
Benjamin, it was he could do to keep him from
crying. He wanted to know if they were jealous of Benjamin as they had
been to Joseph? He tested them. First, he invited them to dinner and
gave Benjamin five times as much food. They didn’t complain. Then
Joseph gave them gifts and gave Benjamin five times as many. Still no
complaint.

He tried one last thing. He told his servants to hide his personal silver
cup in the top of Benjamin’s grain sack. Then he sent the brothers on their
way.

After they left, Joseph sent his steward

after them. When he caught up with them, he
shouted, “What have you done? My master
has treated you with great kindness, and you
have stolen his silver cup!”

“Why do you accuse us, my Lord? We

brought back the money that we found in our
sacks last time. Why would we still your
master’s silver cup? Search our sacks. If you find the cup, the man in
whose sack you find it will die, and all of us will be your master’s slaves.”

Imagine their horror when the cup was found on Benjamin’s sack!
Sadly the brothers turned back to the city.

They threw themselves down before joseph. “Then Judah went to

Joseph and said, ‘When we were here before, you asked us, “Do you
Page 6
have a father or a brother?” And we answered you, “We have an old
father. And we have a younger brother: He was
born when our father was old. This youngest son’s
brother is dead. So he is the only one of his mother’s
children left alive. And our father loves him very
much.” Then you said to us, “Bring that brother to
me. I want to see him.” . . . “You must bring your
youngest brother. If you don’t you will not be
allowed to see me again,” ‘

“‘Later, our father said, “Go again. Buy us a little more food” . . . now
what will happen if we go home to our father without our youngest
brother? When our father sees that the young boy is not with us, he will
die.’

“Judah said, ‘I gave my father a guarantee that the young boy

would be safe. So now, please allow me to stay here and be your slave.
And let the young boy go back home with his brothers. I cannot go back
to my father if the boy is not with me. I couldn’t stand to see my father
that sad.’ “

Joseph could control himself any longer.

“Everyone get out of here except these men!”
he ordered.

“So Joseph said to them, ‘Come close to

me.’ So the brothers came close to him. And
said to them, ‘I am your brother Joseph. You
sold me as a slave to go to Egypt. Now don’t
be worried. Don’t be angry with yourselves
because you sold me here. God sent me here
ahead of you to save people’s lives. . . . And it was to keep you alive in an
amazing way.

“‘And go to my father. Tell him, “Your son Joseph says: God has
made me master over all Egypt. Come down to me quickly. Live in the
land of Goshen. You will be near me. Also your children, your
grandchildren, your flocks and herds and all that you have will be near

Page 7
me. I will care for you during the next five years of hunger. In this way, you
and your family and all that you have will not starve.” ‘ “

Jacob’s sons confessed that they had

lied to him about Joseph’s death. After all
the pain and trouble of his life, Jacob spent
his last 17 years in peace and joy.

God’s Great Plan moved forward.

Before Joseph died, he asked that his body
be taken back to Canaan with them. So
they kept his body in a special casket so
that they would never forget God’s
promised. Sooner or later they would go
back to the Promised Land and take Joseph’s body with them.
