Aspects of formal language to study (from Term 1 Language Module):

 Direct and indirect speech
 Word classes (all of them), e.g. verbs (types and tenses), prepositions, etc.
 Know how to switch a word from one word class to another.
 Figures of speech:
 metaphor, simile, personification, assonance, onomatopoeia,
hyperbole, euphemism, paradox, pun, ambiguity, oxymoron, etc.
 Literal and figurative language
 Subject, object (know the different types), predicate, etc.

Also know:
 How to analyse and answer questions on advertisements and cartoons
(including visual evidence and advertising techniques)
 Tone
 Attitude
 Style (identify and discuss: e.g. how does the style contribute to the
passage?)
