Summary

A young man named Michael Obi was appointed headmaster of Ndume Central School. Encounters a
conflict with the nearby village. Obi put up barbwire to block the path from and to the village. The path
was a path to the burial grounds. Later on in the story, the Hardens and hedges are destroyed by the
villagers. Michael is then fired.

failed and had many flaws that the villagers took advantage of.

"The whole purpose of our school," he said finally, "is to eradicate just such beliefs as that. Dead men do

The Priest

The priest represents the natives of the country, he is their voice and his character shows that he would
like to keep the traditions of the village without causing trouble.

"What you say may be true," replied the priest, "but we follow the practices of our fathers. If you reopen
the path, we shall have nothing to quarrel about."
