They form a band so that they can escape it all and head for the bright lights of the city For girl band Love Bites, making music was their ticket out of small-town suburbia. And considering how young they were when they got together - their early teens ~ they worked amazingly hard to achieve their dream. While most teenagers were preoccupied with exem hell and chasing boys, the quartet - whose influences include singers and bands like T-Rex, Elvis and Black Sabbath ~ had only one mission in mind: to get a record deal. The friends got the idea for the band during a school trip to Germany. They started out by rehearsing in garages, deafening their neighbours with the volume of their music! Their first gigs took place in dingy village hall, in front of family members. They were desperate for a wider audience, but without any contacts in the record industry the girls had to rely on their ingenuity. They logged onto the internet, sew an advert for @ gil band, and rang up. The record company thought they were too young but asked them to send in a demonstration CD anyway. This was quickly followed up with an interview. They thought we had potential, so they offered us a contract; smiles Nicki The band's line-up is as follows: Aimee, 16, plays lead Guitar; Nicki 17, is on rhythm guitar; Dani, 16, plays bass; and Hanah, 15, is the drummer. And their music? ‘Punk op with a slice of rock music’ fs how Nicki describes it. The band are keen to stress that they're the real deal, not @ roup of girls hyped up by a cynical record company, as often happens these days. ‘We write all our own material and play our own instruments; Nicki explains. ‘We play live music, too. We aren't 2 put-together band because we've always been friends. We just got bored with hanging around a park so we formed a band. Aimee’s been playing guitar since she was nine, Aimee and Dani actually wrote ‘ur first song in the back of a science class! ‘The band has a strong, marketable look, which they claim fs all down to them, Although they want the music to do the talking, the band realise that how they come across is a vital part of the package. It’s about the music, but you need an image that the kids can relate to’ Nicki explains. T like to dress punky; Danf’s glamorous. Our clothes suit our different personalities! The girs talk excitedly about how they've taken over a three-storey house in London, which they share with their tour manager. So are there many rock star rows when they/re home together? ‘The only arguments we have are about music’ laughs Nicki. ‘Aimee and Hannah share the bottom floor and Dani and I share the top: ‘They've got a bigger stereo than us, so we have music wars and turn the music up and dovin’ says Dani, with a chuckle. Love Bites are in the midst of a jam-packed schedule. Currently the ils are promoting their new single, so theyve got a round of interviews to do with radio and 1V companies and other media bodies. When those are finished, there's their debut album to finish off. And as well as all that, they have a school tour awaiting them. ‘So what would these young rockers say to those ageing, mainly male journalists who, confronted with the sight of a new female band, argue that women just can't handle guitars? I think if girls want to start a band, they should’ declares Nicki, defiantly, ‘Girt can play guitars — and well prove that! When they arrived at the school, these same teenagers were moody, rebellious and had no respect for anyone. ‘They'd made a habit of bullying their schoolmates and disobeying their teachers, and had driven their parents crazy with their bad behaviour. They had no direction in life and didn't understand the bad effect they were having on themselves, their family or friends. Mark was one of the worst. He was 0 out of contro) that his parents had seriously considered sending him to a boot camp. Boot camps aim to ‘shock’ young people into good behaviour by making life really ‘unpleasant! It's a bit like being in the army. You start the day with an early moming wake-up call and are then made to run several kilometres before breakfast! There military-style discipline. The staff are cold and tuncaring, and quick to punish bad behaviour. Anyone caucht breaking a rule, however small, has to do hard physical Work as punishment. Luckily for Mark, his parents decided against boot ‘camp when they read a report on the subject. This made it clear that boot camps just don't work. In fact, they can make matters worse. Teenagers, it seems, refuse to listen to authority figures they don't respect. Its the same with rules ~ if teenagers think they're unfair, they won't obey them. Most teens really hate the people guarding them at boot camp and see the. rules as something to get around. They become more ‘and more hostie during their stay and often leave boot ‘camp more rebellious than when they arrived! 4 tough love | Reading PA) Ioan Mather a i hie Ba ey pane do behest atte a Lah ee bee After a great deal of thought, Mark’s parents decided to send him to Red Forest, @ therapeutic school for troubled teens. Its 2 boarding school, so students eat and sleep there and oniy go home for the holidays. Instead of having his own bedroom, Mark shares @ small dormitory with @ group of other students. Making friends is considered very important at Red Forest and the dormitory system is a good way of doing this, The school is comfortable and well equipped - a ‘home from home’, as the prospectus says. The staff are caring and supportive and give students lots of positive encouragement to achieve their dreams. The teenagers also have counselling sessions several times a week, as individuals and in groups, where they get help with ‘any emotional issues that are troubling them, While students are expected to work hard at their academic studies during the week, weekends are much more relaxed. It's the time for hobbies and special interests! Off-campus activities include rafting and mountain-biking. Those who prefer to stay in the school ‘grounds can enjoy sports like basketball, football biking and swimming. Mark loves weekends because he can take part in his favourite activity ~rock-climbing! Learning to rock climb has given him a great sense of accomplishment and helped his self-confidence. Climbing with his peers has taught him the importance of ‘cooperation and teamwork, as well. Mark's been at Red Forest for eighteen months now and will reach the end of his course soon. Before he finishes, he'll be taking part in three weeks of voluntary activities - mayoe working with homeless people or at an animal shelter.
