Chapter 13: Glimpsing the Future of Computing

Chapter Goal

To learn about emerging technologies that are likely to impact the future of computing

Learning Objectives

After students complete this section, they will be able to do the following:

13.2 Discuss the possible applications for 3-D printing and displays.

Session 13.2 Printing and Displaying in 3-D

1. What is 3-D printing?

3-D printing (3-DP) or additive manufacturing refers to the ability to use printer-like technology to output
three-dimensional objects using one of a variety of materials. 3-D printing can be used for rapid
prototyping, mass customization, and a variety of hobbyist applications.

2. Explain 3-D display

A display which gives an effect of depth for the viewer. Technologies include holography, volumetric, multi-
view and stereoscopic displays

3. Read and summarize the use of 3-D printing for human organs.

I understood that technology is rapidly developing making it possible for doctors to think
about using 3D printing in creating organs instead of transplanting it from a person to

another. The idea of printing a human kidney or liver in a lab may seem
incomprehensible, even creepy. But to many scientists in the field, bioprinting holds great
promise. Authentic printed organs could be used for drug or vaccine testing, freeing
researchers from less accurate methods such as tests on animals or on synthetic models.
