HATIsit that makes some anglers ust so damned good? Our sport is littered with names who have been at the top of their game for many years, ‘across many disciplines. ‘There must be something that separates these anglers from us mere mortals. On the face of it, ours is sport that anybody can excel at. don’t think anyoneis born a ‘naturally gifted’ angler, and there certainly {sn’ta set of physical attributes that would give someone an advantage in the way that being incredibly tall helps for acareer in basketball In fishing, we all essentially have access to the same tacKle, bats and - barring exclusive syndicates - venues. One thing that comes across regularly ‘when we'e out shooting features with these top anglersis their attention to detail andan unrelenting desire for perfection. There's never a ‘that will do’ attitude ifarig doesn’t land exactly where they want it. Many also seem to havea sixth sense when itcomes toreadinga swimand choosing when to make tactical change. While alot ofthis comes with experience, some anglers certainly seem to possess this skill on a whole other level, Perhaps t'sa throwback to our hunter gatherer days? One great example, and an angler who embodies all the factors I've touched upon, is Steve Ringer. recently watched the new Fishing Gurus Underwater film, and on Steve's very first cast he landed his feeder on top of the camera. There's accuracy for you! Inanother video with our tackle editor, ‘Mark Sawyer, Steve's knowledge about how air pressure can affect casting performance, and his ability to work out the contours of his swim by counting the ‘drop’ on his feeder, is simply mind boggling. He gives this area as much thought as he does bait preparation and rigs. All we can doisleam from these guys and tuy toimpart as much of their knowledge as, ‘we can into our own fishing. AST week we read how a‘combined operation’ between the Environment Agency, Police and the Angling Trust swooped on a trout reservoir in Essex on. the opening day of their new season, and found 27 of the 153 anglers present hadn't got arod licence. ‘That's a huge proportion, equating to just under 18 per cent, yet the EA offically states that the rod licence evasion rate is typically closer to five per cent. That's a hhuge disparity between the two figures. ‘Those with experience feel that the true number of anglers fishing without a licence is somewhere between 10 and 15 per cent. With over one million anglers in the UK, that’s alot of missed revenue, anda lot of anglers getting away with it. ‘So, the old enforcement argument rolls on. ‘Should we have more balliff boots on the bank, oF should that resource be put into issues many people believe are more pressing? Perch, which normally refuse to wake up before dusk, seem to have no such ssuesin the middle of the day when presented with afly, and I well remember using flies with a yellow streak when I fished a Midlands reservoir alongside the ate, great Bob church. Every st resultedin a perch ora zander, and I can’timagine we'd have fared half as well if we'd been bait fishing. Soa day chasing predators on thefly seemed a great way to see the river season out. ‘My companion for the trip was Wayne Little, whose success with pike on the fly makes my own efforts seem insignificant. He's had pike to over 3olb, and is adamant that fly can tempt thems when ll else fails. Besides that, fly fishing for pike is fun, and isn that the ‘whole point of angling? Brightsun and clear water ‘made cap and glasses a must, andit didn’t takelong for us to spot a few jacks in the margins, ‘waiting for an unsuspecting roach to swim by. With standard, ‘coarse fishing tackle, such small pike would hold little interest forme, but with afly rod inmy. hand itwasall about their reaction and the take rather than their size. They'd also offer practice fora rusty casting arm, Despite landing the line across couple of them, greed proved their downfall, and [laughed ‘out loudas they engulfed the fly ‘with no hesitation! Wayne, however, didn't need the practice and was already targeting double-figure fish ‘with his ted and white creation adorned with extra silver tinsel, The previous night had been cold, with a clear sky leading toahard frost, and not every pike was on its starting blocks, ‘That included the one Wayne had spotted. Generally, alure requires a reasonable amount of ‘movernent to impart life intoit, although a rapid retrieve can sometimes prove too much fora less aggressive, bigger pike. But even when Wayne paused the retrieve and the fy fll tothe bottom it acted as fit was alive, and the tiniest of twitches had it pulsing again, ‘We were both convinced that anything other than alivebait ‘would be ignored, but his quarry was wound up to such adegree that it was compelled to strike. Gills flared, and the fly disappearedintoits toothy maw. The fight that followed was, Impressive, but the hit was undoubtedly the best part, and something], too, wanted to experience with a bigger fish. ‘Standing ona moss-covered stump, the extra foot of height allowed metosee two low ‘doubles lying motionless the bottom just two rodlengths out. Toreach them, only a flick of the arm was needed before my fly was falling gently through the water column towards them, There wasnoneed toretrieve, asthe fy sill seemed alive, so only when it was between the two pike and a foot above their heads did Tgivethe linea tweak, The left-hand fish moved at such a speed I barely registered the fly disappearing inside its jaws, Simultaneously stripping line and striking, [was rewarded by the sight ofa pike going supersonicand jumping clear of the water. Their soft nature is areal winner in harder times. ‘when bites are ata premium and every single fish counts. Timesare slowly changing, though, andeach week the weather and water are warming up. Thereare more bites to be had and so expanders begin to takea bit ofa back seat, replaced by their hard pellet equivalent. Of course, you can still catch con expanders, but chances are you're going to start missing too ‘many bites and wasting time reelingin or shipping back, turning the ar blues you do so! With hard pellets, missed bites are far less common. Put simply, use these and you're goingto be ‘more efficient in your fishing. What's going wrong? This salto do with seeing the bite quicker. 'd guess that the ‘livett (fusing one) and dropper shot are not close enough to the hook. By pushing them down, ceating a very postive shotting pattern, the bite will register much faster and allow you to hit more if bites, Using heavier dropper shot will also make a difference, going from, say, NNoI0s to Nod. dais try a shorter hooklength of around four inches. For me, a pop-up only comes into playin very clear water when carp are feeding by sight and not smell. A ‘afters also a bottom bait, but offers better presentation than anormal bolic, As its neutral in buoyancy, you can use ‘a much bigger hook and sil have the wafter behave very ‘naturally. Carp anglers have known this for decades, but ‘match anglers are only just cottoning on tothe advantages! I getlots of little taps on the tip when fishing the Method feeder. Would these befrom small fish, and should strike at them? ‘The taps are probably not from smal fish, so puta single ‘maggot on the hook and you'll soon know if they are! If not, bry the bait deeper into the ball of feed, putting more pellets ‘or grounabait on top of the hhookbait and squeezing the ball tightly. Carp wil fight for the feed more positively. Or switch toa pellet feeder, push the feed in tighter but have the hookbait come out almost immediately ~ this, ‘way a fish can only getat the hhookbait, leading to more positive bites. ' ve always thought that, in clear water, yellows and whites are better, whereas in coloured water it’s pinks and oranges. ‘What the underwater footage showed me was that, in clear water, the carp struggled to pick out a yellow or white wafter but could home in almost immediately on a fluoro pink bait. We could certainly ‘ee a pink bat on screen far easier, {and the fish seemed to be of the ‘same opinion I's now got me seriously thinking tha fl could ‘oniy have one colour of wafter to take for al levels of water clarity, it ‘would be fluore pink or orange! Liwas fishing in Tat of water and, for my first cast, | put the micro pellets on to my Hybrid feeder the way always have done = harder for the base layer and softer for the top layer, sod get a quick breakdown. | got that allright, s0 much so that when the feeder landed on screen, the top layer of pelletshad gone and stowly drifted {down on top ofthe feeder a few seconds later. The answer was simple -'a ot! Even a two-inch pul on the tip from ane bite physically dragged the feeder off screen, and the same thing happened when positioning the rod after casting. These were only light movements, but they translated toa considerable distance underwater, and it got me thinking that f this happened again have to wind in and recast ust couldnt be certain ‘what had happened out in the lake, and it would be playing on my mind, Id always suspected that the way | hhave my wafter hookbaits on a bait spike inside a looped hair rig gave ‘me good presentation, but the underwater footage showed me Just how good. When a fish came Into the sim, sucked the bait in ‘and spatit out, the wafter returned toilts optimum position, even with heavy size 10 QM hook The fact thatthe wafter can pivot Inside the loop makes this happen, ‘Whereas had I put the spike on the fend ofa normal single-strand har, the hook could've been masked beneath the bat or sat at an angle that wouldn't have resulted in a positive hookhold onthe strike. ‘The underwater footage showed sme how much longer a Hybrid feeder retains bait attraction from the micro pellets in the peg ‘Abybrid doesn't empty Immediately, but keeps some pellets inside the feeder body land close tothe bat. couple ‘of carp do come in and clean up the pellets that have come off the feeder, but don't take the hookbait, there's stil some feed remaining to sive me the chance ofa bite next time a carp comes along.
