It can also be a preparatory subject for for + object + infinitive

It will suit me for you to arrive at about ten o’clock.


It’s essential for the papers to be ready before Thursday.
It is convenient for you to take train and bus.
‘It + that-clause or + wh- clause

It’s probable that we’ll be a little late.

It’s surprising that nobody attended the meeting.

It is hard to believe that the house is being sold at such a low price.

It is important that the patient rest in bed. (It is important for the patient to rest
in bed.)

It is advisable that pilots take a nap during long flights.

It was amazing how she recovered so quickly.


Anticipatory it + -ing

It was nice seeing you.


It’s crazy her going off like that.
It’s worth going to Wales if you have the time.
It’s no use trying to explain – I’m not interested.
WORD OF CAUTION!

Anticipatory it cannot introduce noun phrases.

*It was interesting the movie that we watched yesterday. (“the movie” is a noun
phrase)

+ anticipate, expect, envisage, intend (formal)

The organisers didn’t expect (there to be) quite such an overwhelming


response.

We don’t anticipate (there being) any resistance from the anti-hunting lobby.
Other patterns with there

There used to be a house at the end of the street.

Researchers noticed that there tends to be a higher number of influenza cases in warm winters.

There seems to be a problem with the computer.

There seems to have been an accident.

THERE + arise/arrive/come/emerge/enter/exist/follow/live/occur/remain/result/sit/stand/take
place:

There arose an unexpected problem in the middle of the meeting.

There remain some answered emails. Please take care of them.

There follows a scene in which the protagonist discovers he is doomed.
