SEAS YOUR DAY

DIY HOME DECOR
the steps

We are going to refresh your room today, not completely renovate it, so lower your expections, and

anxiety! You’ll start with what you have and in one day transform your space.

Step 1 - Purge the Room

Remove (or hide) as much as you know doesn’t belong in this room (the laundry basket, extra

furniture, papers, stuff like that). Also remove any items that aren’t permanent or too big/heavy to

move for the day.

Step 2 - Clean
Clean/Wash/Polish Everything! Cobwebs, woodwork, windowsills, bedding, window treatments,

windows, light fixtures, floors and furniture. The clean-up alone will freshen up your room ;-)

Step 3 - Color Balance

Professional interior decorators use the 70-20-10 Rule to balance color throughout a room. In a

nutshell, the major part of your room, 70%, is one color. For this one day room makeover, work with

this color. Usually this will be your wall color. Then 20% of the color will be the minor color, usually in

trim work and moldings or ceiling or flooring. And finally 10% of the color in your room will come

from accessories. This is what will make the room pop and give it personality. It’s fine to split the

color 60-30-10. Let your eye be the judge. CLICK TO SEE COLOR PALETTE IDEAS ON PINTEREST

Step 4 - Shop Your Home

Because you’re not changing literally 90% of the room, the editing and balance of the decorating

will come from accessories. Look around your house to find an inspiration piece -- a piece of art, an

area rug, etc. You’ll want something that has your major color in it. Using the inspiration piece

gather other items that have your 10% color choice. If you don’t have an inspiration item, decide on

the 10% color you wish to accent. Go find those items. Ideas: Toss pillows, throw blanket, vase,

flowers, frames, baskets, art work, scuplture, photos, accent furniture, etc.  DIYers will see how a

can of spray paint or chalk paint can transform small home goods into the perfect accessory.

Step 5 - Pull It Together

Bring back items that you washed or definitely belong. Rearrange furnishings, if desired. Create

“new spaces” where there wasn’t one. For example: a reading nook, bookshelf display, beverage

station, work area, etc. Distribute the 10% color accessory items around the room. Create a focal

point by grouping like items together.

Finally, walk out of the room and then walk back in with fresh eyes. Happy Decorating!
