At the Winter Olympics, held at Lake Placid in 1980, the
US ice-hockey team made it to the finals, along with
the team from the USSR. No one had much hope that
the Americans would win a gold medal, however. Why
was that? Well, the USSR team had won gold medals
at six of the previous seven Olympics, and they were all
pros. The US team, on the other hand, was made up of
amateur and college players. Once the game had started,
the USSR team took the lead three times, with the US team
just managing to equalise each time. Then, in the third
period, the US scored a goal that gave them a one-point
lead and, despite some furious attacking from the other
side, managed to hang on to it. In the last moments of the
game, the crowd was counting down the final seconds. The
‘Miracle on Ice’ became one of the Olympics biggest
surprises. Disappointingly for American ice-hockey fans,
the game was not actually broadcast live, but was shown
at a later time on prime-time TV.
