leveraging improved customer experiences to increase the lifetime value (LTV) of current customers
A real-world experience makes NSO a leading automation solution today with the following set of
capabilities:
A true model-driven system
NSO can automatically generate a single, well-defined API into the entire network environment. Using the
standardized YANG modeling language, you can model and automate any type of device—layers 1
through 7, physical or virtual, addressed traditionally or via software-defined networking (SDN) overlays.
Beyond devices, you can also model any type of service or policy.
Use Cases
Because of its flexibility, the proposed Cisco NSO can support numerous use cases in both enterprise
and service provider environments. The network applications and services that have been developed in
Cisco NSO include:
▪ Cross-domain workflows
▪ L2 and L3 VPNs
▪ Ethernet private line (E-LINE) and Ethernet private LAN (E-LAN)
▪ Virtual managed services such as a virtual router (vRouter) and virtual firewall (vFirewall)
▪ Border gateway protocol (BGP) management, including peering policy management
▪ L2 virtual networks
▪ ACLs and firewall policy rules
▪ Layer 4–7 service chaining
With the powerful service creation capabilities of Cisco NSO, even complex new services can be created,
tested, and deployed in a matter of days.
End-To-End Automation
The proposed Cisco NSO provides service orchestration that spans between people who build services
and ones who operate infrastructure, multiple physical and virtual domains in your network, and across
different domains and vendors. It acts as a bridge between the top and the bottom of your service stack.
extensive multivendor support, you can extend end-to-end automation to virtually any use case or
device.
The proposed Cisco NSO provides a fully automated, end-to-end atomic transaction control. If you make
a change to a network service or device, either everything or nothing goes through the network. If
necessary, the system reverts to the previous stable state to keep your services running.
The Cisco NSO also includes a minimum difference engine to calculate the minimum configuration
changes needed to transition from one state to another. This intelligence dramatically reduces the code
you deal with when automating network services. It also improves the overall stability of your
environment.
▪ Wireline access disaggregation: Continuous increase in data rates requires lowering the last-mile
distance to customers. Use of distributed virtual access nodes in micro data centers lowers the cost
per bit for the operators.
▪ Mobile edge computing (MEC) and virtualization: Efficient placement of services between
distributed and centralized data centers based on application latency, QoS, and bandwidth
requirements is necessary.
▪ Cloud-native Control and User Plane Separation (CUPS): The proposed Cisco cloud-native
packet core and distributed SDN architecture enable CUPS, so you can partition your network and
position functions and services exactly where you need them. This can enable latency-sensitive
services and content caching to move closer to end users.
▪ Network slicing: Network slicing enables building what looks like discrete end-to-end networks for
different 5G services or customers. SR flexible algorithm (Flex-Algo) and a cross-domain multivendor
services orchestrator enable soft slicing, while maximizing resource efficiency.
▪ Automation: Network automation is a key ingredient for the 5G transformation to enable use of on-
box and off-box data to gain real-time actionable insights. Cisco Crosswork™ Network Automation
provides a modular application ecosystem with open APIs to accelerate application and service
development as well as best-in-class infrastructure software functions to improve time to market.
Service providers can increase network resource utilization with closed-loop real-time monitoring and
optimization.
These architectural shifts require an evolution from unified multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) towards
SR and border gateway protocol (BGP) VPN technologies, pushing IP all the way down to the access
layer to enable a true end-to-end packet solution. This enables wireline and wireless network
convergence, enhanced SLAs, resource-efficient soft network slicing, less than 50ms of protection
against failures, scalable traffic engineering (TE), and a simplified protocol stack that eliminates protocols
like the Label Distribution Protocol (LDP) and the Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) TE.
RAN Architectures
RAN networks represent a large portion of service provider OpEx and CapEx spending every year. You
need the flexibility to deploy any—or several—radio architectures in a cost-effective way, depending on
local/regional constraints. The new 4G/5G use cases may also put constraints on the RAN architectures.
To support the changing nature of the 5G network, one of the most important factors to address is the
current and future architecture of the RAN. Evolving this part of the network to an optimized, cost-efficient
architecture is crucial for the profitability of the mobile network’s evolution to 5G. Not only is this where
operators spend most of their money today, but being geographically dispersed, it is also difficult to
manage. Therefore, any development or evolution of the RAN to improve efficiency or reduce operational
costs requires serious consideration.
The proposed Converged SDN Transport solution for 5G networks can deliver on the tight time-error
budgets and low-latency implications of C-RAN on the transport network.
We believe that the transport network of the future should be able to simultaneously comply with all
transport network types defined by the RAN requirements, as well as enable a true wireless/wireline
convergence. We propose a converged multi-service infrastructure, where strict requirements such as
fronthaul traffic with very low latency and high bandwidth requirements co-exist with midhaul, backhaul,
and/or business services with varying SLAs in a scalable and operationally optimized way. This network
will also enable other key architectural changes introduced by 5G such as CUPS with UP distribution,
multi-access edge compute, and network slicing.
them in an enterprise data center. The MEC and CUPS use cases require fully automated operations
across operational domains to account for the large number of edge computing sites where these
workloads must be managed. Cloud-native technologies offer a richer set of infrastructure and tools to
achieve this level of automation.
Seamless integration between the WAN and the distributed data centers by unifying on SR and BGP-
based VPNs simplifies the network. SR MPLS and SRv6 can enable seamless service chaining for virtual
network functions.
Network Slicing
Network slicing is an end-to-end partitioning of the network resources and network functions so that
selected services and customers may run in isolation from each other for a specific business purpose.
One of the major benefits of the 5G network is that it allows business customers to define a specific
requirement that can be fulfilled by the mobile operator with an agreed upon SLA through network slicing.
SR Flex-Algo and a cross-domain multivendor services orchestrator enable soft slicing while maximizing
resource efficiency. Flex-Algo provides per-user, per-application traffic steering with routing isolation to
meet any required SLA and end-user slice visibility.
Traditional routing protocols use the IGP metric on links and the “Shortest Path First” algorithm to
calculate the “best” path between an ingress and egress point in the network. This approach does not
consider real-time link latency, utilization, and loss. Flex-Algo in SR enables an operator to define their
own custom flexible algorithm, based on a wide range of variables including link latency, loss, bandwidth,
and shared risk link groups (SRLG), to achieve a specific aim. For example, an operator may have an IP
network using highly reliable fiber paths, which they own, and less reliable fiber paths, which they lease.
They want to support a highly reliable and low-latency IP service. Flex-Algo can achieve this by building a
routing table, constantly optimized with near real-time link latency information on links owned by the
operator. Other commonly discussed Flex-Algo use cases include bandwidth-guaranteed paths and
routing between ingress and egress points using disjoint paths.
Network Automation
Network automation is the ability to harmonize different types of network resources towards a desired
end-to-end intent. Economic delivery of 5G services requires a holistic setup of different network
attributes to form and build a service. Any 5G service may be composed of a combination of several
micro functions and specific orders where traffic steering needs to take place in between.
The proposed Cisco Crosswork Automation Suite provides programmable, 5G service-aware business
logic capabilities to operate large scale 5G transport networks. Service providers can set up transport
network slices according to changing needs of real-time 5G services. With closed-loop automation slice,
SLAs can be monitored and modified based on the real-time state of the network infrastructure, thus
reducing the OpEx and improving time to market. With the state-of-the-art implementation of Cisco
Crosswork Automation Suite, the proposed solution integration testing is performed in labs allowing
applications to work seamlessly in customer environments, to improve their satisfaction. Service providers
can automate operational tasks such as service-oriented network provisioning, tactical bandwidth
optimization, continuous real-time network optimization, and topology-inventory reporting using
Crosswork Automation Suite.
5G Use Cases
The growth of 5G-enabled services for different industries means service providers will need to
investigate how their network architecture can meet 5G requirements to capture these new business
opportunities. Industry stakeholders and standards organizations have identified several potential use
cases for 5G, which demand very diverse requirements. These use cases have been categorized by the
3GPP.
▪ Enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB): Takes the advantages of the 5G New Radio (NR) radio
access technology (RAT) to accommodate some of the most bandwidth-thirsty applications today—
that means 4K video, augmented/virtual reality, streaming analytics, and other services that would
previously have required fixed wireless infrastructure. eMBB provides the high bandwidth and high
speeds needed for densely populated urban areas and event locations. The services expect 50-plus
Mbps data rates everywhere.
▪ Massive machine-type communications (mMTC): Supports the connection density, power
consumption, and low complexity required by IoT to keep costs low and field maintenance minimal in
some of the most challenging environments. It serves billions of low-cost, long-range, ultra-energy
efficient devices, machines, and things that need connectivity from remote locations. It also serves
cloud applications with periodic and infrequent communication.
▪ Ultra-reliable low-latency communications (uRLLC): Adds stability to provide mission-critical
environments with high-availability and resilience needs. The tactile response time is expected to be
less than 1ms. Public safety and emergency services supporting disaster response and location
services are critical for lifeline communication and recovery.
Each category of service has unique requirements essential to its applications that it mandates to the
transport infrastructure. Cisco 5G innovation, offered by M/s. Loyal Telesystems Private Limited, is
focused on making the network relevant to the applications using it in a programmable and scalable
manner.
We believe that a converged end-to-end packet infrastructure starting in the access layer, stretching
across the core network all the way to the data center based on RAN and packet-based QoS, builds up
the underlying xHaul (fronthaul, midhaul, and backhaul) transport network. This provides flexible
application placement, scalability, and reliability and results in lean operational costs. On top of this, we
layer VPN services, either based on BGP-based VPNs or business SD-WAN technologies, to support a
multi-service environment capable of supporting strict SLAs. These VPN technologies are the key feature
to deliver different network slices in the shared transport network. Traffic flows for required services are
set up and provisioned using SR-based traffic policies and traffic steering augmented by external SDN
controllers and path computation engines
The Cisco xHaul architecture, available through M/s. Loyal Telesystems Private Limited, addresses the
current and future mobile transport network challenges. A smooth evolution to Cisco xHaul architecture is
possible by leveraging the technology and architecture flexibility and interoperability capabilities. The
Cisco xHaul architecture provides the baseline for future, more integrated, cross-domain interactions.
The proposed Cisco Converged SDN architecture builds upon years of experience in delivering
successful, multi-service network deployments for service providers. It provides mobile and IP
technologies with carrier-grade features that support the design of highly scalable networks with
increased reliability and simplicity. As illustrated, the Cisco portfolio delivers significant performance
increases, while providing our customers with investment protection.
The Cisco Converged SDN Transport solution, delivered by M/s. Loyal Telesystems Private Limited,
provides:
▪ Enhanced timing and synchronization
▪ Simplified network with SR forwarding plane
▪ Converged BGP control plane with EVPN and L3VPNs
▪ Trustworthy systems
▪ 25GE support for 5G cost-optimized interfaces
▪ Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) 3.0 certification
Fronthaul Routers
The emergence of standard packet-based fronthaul interfaces and the industry’s interest in effective
transport solutions led Cisco to extend the existing portfolio with a new family of fronthaul routers. These
routers support known fronthaul interfaces, including enhanced Common Public Radio Interface (eCPRI),
Common Public Radio Interface over Ethernet (CPRIoE), and (IEEE1914.3) Radio over Ethernet (RoE),
as well as midhaul, backhaul, and business transport requirements. These new fronthaul converged
platforms have been designed to effectively differentiate and comply with the various traffic type
requirements. They assure latency and priority to eCPRI/CPRIoE streams and support advanced
synchronization requirements.
Why Packet-based Fronthaul?
Segment Routing
SR is a technology invented by Cisco, and available through M/s. Loyal Telesystems Private Limited,. It is
based on a source routing paradigm, where the source node defines the path that a packet is going to
take through the network. A key attribute of the 5G transport infrastructure is to easily carve out and reuse
capacity, compute, and resiliency, and guarantee latency. We believe that the most flexible and efficient
transport architecture to achieve all these are based on packet technology with SR. SR can cost-
effectively deliver this flexibility, affordability, and visibility in the transport network. It can support
consumer, enterprise, fixed, and mobile services across the transport network.
The SDN controller, Cisco SR–Path Computation Element (SR–PCE), builds and keeps an updated
network topology, which is used by its purpose-built algorithm for source routing path computation to
calculate and maintain inter- and cross-domain paths. The use of SDN controller is beneficial in the
following use cases:
▪ Low-latency path: Cisco SR–PCE can compute a path with latency, and it is delivered below a
certain threshold. With 5G and its latency-sensitive applications, this will be an increasingly important
service the network will have to deliver as critical dynamic network slices.
▪ Disjointed path: Cisco SR–PCE can compute two distinct paths (not sharing the same fiber and
same devices, and so on), which enables you to increase network resiliency and offer advanced
SLAs to your customers.
▪ On-demand Next Hop (ODN): Provisioning multi-domain services (L2VPN and L3VPN) comes with
complexity and scalability issues, notably, when routing information needs to be redistributed across
domains. With the ODN feature, there is no need to do any route redistribution. It triggers delegation
of computation of an end-to-end label switched path (LSP) to the Cisco SR–PCE including constraints
and policies.
▪ Resource avoidance: Cisco SR–PCE can calculate a path that avoids specific resources (for
example, nodes, link, and SRLG).
▪ Lowest-cost path: If an application does not have a low latency requirement, a lowest cost path can
be applied, leaving more room for latency-critical applications and/or reducing the requirement for
such expensive bandwidth.
▪ Bandwidth optimization: Cisco WAN Automation Engine (WAE) can compute the best path based
on network bandwidth, which can then be leveraged by Cisco SR–PCE to optimize the path through
the network.
Security
Security is a foundational aspect of our 5G strategy. Security does not come from only protecting the
borders of the network, but by embedding security in the network. When evolving architectural concepts
are combined into the 5G architecture, the threat surface for 5G expands. The proposed Cisco 5G
Transport network portfolio comes with built-in security enablers such as Cisco Trust Anchor Module
(TAm) and Cisco Crosswork Trust Insights, also available through M/s. Loyal Telesystems Private
Limited. Cisco TAm helps verify that Cisco hardware is authentic and provides additional security
services. Cisco Crosswork Trust Insights provides signed and encrypted system integrity information to
track the trust posture of the network hardware and software components. With the use of Cisco TAm on
routers, we offer hardware root of trust, and build a chain of trust with the following principles:
▪ Establish trust in hardware: The Cisco Tam and the Trusted Platform Module are based on the
Trusted Computing Group industry standard. These include anti-tamper protection, highly secure
storage, policy and configuration, and cryptographic services, providing the most robust security.
▪ Verify trust in operating systems: Cisco uses the Secure Development Lifecycle (SDL) to build
repeatable, measurable, resilient, and trustworthy operating systems with threat modeling and
vulnerability testing.
▪ Maintain trust in runtime: Cisco performs continuous internal cryptographically secure checks on
hardware and software to maintain the integrity on the running system.
The Cisco 5G security architecture combines artificial intelligence and deep learning to create a network
that will orchestrate both physical and virtual resources with equal proficiency, resulting in optimal
network efficiencies.
▪ Proactive control: Stays ahead of things to become more efficient and secure.
Cisco Crosswork Network Automation works to update the typical network operation lifecycle where the
feedback loop is done manually through human intervention. It uses the closed-loop network automation
lifecycle to take isolated repetitive human actions from different functional groups and embed this
intelligence into software. Closed-loop automation helps reduce vulnerability and outages due to human
error. It transforms your operators from a reactive stage to a forward-thinking stage and empowers them
to work on more critical tasks and innovations.
The proposed Cisco Crosswork Network Automation delivers an operations transformation framework for
addressing the business challenges that businesses face as they seek to transform their operations and
business model. It offers an operations framework to transform network engineering and operating
functions. This solution is modular, customizable to the context of each deployment scenario and network
environment.
On-premises solutions provide actionable insights with automated network orchestration, accelerating
mean-time-to-value by monetizing agile new services, as well as minimizing mean-time-to-remediation to
avoid network degradation and customer issues. Cisco Crosswork Cloud, also available through M/s.
Loyal Telesystems Private Limited, provides multiple SaaS solutions that provide operational insights and
validation of network health and security with the agility and scale of the cloud.
Use cases
Here are some examples of Cisco Crosswork Network Automation use cases that describe what to
expect from the transformation of operations:
▪ Network configuration as a code: Cisco Crosswork Network Automation toolset enables operators
to treat network configuration like software code. New configurations get developed and deployed
with modern techniques that now allow a version control system, automated testing, simulation
testing, and a peer review process.
▪ Self-service monitoring: Cisco Crosswork Network Automation continuously self-monitors the
preselected key performance indicators related to a service or network and notifies of any breach.
▪ Machine learning–based event management: Cisco Crosswork Network Automation correlation
engine correlates current events with similar events in the past and suggests remediation. It also has
the ability to actuate the document called “Play.” This process simplifies software provisioning,
configuration management, and application deployment.

Cisco Crosswork Network Insights
Cisco Crosswork Network Insights is a cloud-based service designed to proactively track the health of
your network and the status of your BGP prefixes. It shows how your prefixes are seen by your peers. It
operates as a hosted service and helps you assess the routing health of your network. Cisco Crosswork
Network Insights takes care of the arduous task of collecting, storing, parsing, and analyzing network
routing data from many sources so you can focus on your business instead of installing and maintaining
complex software. Like any other SaaS offering, we manage updates to Cisco Crosswork Network
Insights carefully and in a timely manner. We add new features quickly using well-established continuous
integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) processes.
The service has four main components:
▪ Data streaming and storage: Cisco Crosswork Network Insights uses live BGP data from both
public and private data sources. The data streaming, ingestion, storage, parsing, and analytics are all
done in the cloud.
▪ Analytics engine: Cisco Crosswork Network Insights analytics engine tracks the health of your
network and the status of your prefixes. Routing data is enriched with other data sources to enhance
operator experience. Additional data sources include resource public key infrastructure (RPKI),
internet routing registry (IRR), WHOIS, and IP Geolocation which collectively provide prefix
ownership, identification, and geographic location information.
▪ Event stream and alarming framework: Cisco Crosswork Network Insights maintains a real-time
event stream for tracking any and every change experienced on the Internet. Alarms are generated
based on alarm logic specific to the alarm type, and are optimized to reduce the number of false
positives.
▪ Web portal and APIs: Cisco Crosswork Network Insights is designed to be end-to-end API-driven.
Well- defined, REST-based APIs make it very easy to integrate with your existing OSS/BSS systems.
You can send alarm notifications to modern collaboration tools (such as Cisco Spark or Slack) in
addition to more traditional tools like email. The web portal allows you to configure your settings,
browse both the summary and detailed information about your prefixes, and manage alarms.
the risk of making a mistake and creating an additional error through high-stakes manual network
operator intervention. The ability to identify and remediate problems in the network before customers
notice is critical for network operators. With the Cisco Crosswork Change Automation and Cisco Health
Insights closed loop function, service providers can automate the process of discovering and remediating
problems in the network by allowing an operator to match an alarm to pre-defined remediation tasks.
These tasks will automatically be performed once a defined KPI threshold has been breached.
Cisco Crosswork Optimization Engine
Cisco Crosswork Optimization Engine provides real-time network optimization capabilities that allow
operators to effectively maximize network utility as well as increase service velocity. It not only provides
end-to-end visibility, but also the ability to visualize the network across different layers (including segment
routing, L2, and L3VPN) and the relationship between each layer. It leverages the IETF-standard and
BGP - Link State (BGP-LS) to discover IP networks automatically. It also provides an easy-to-use user
interface to manage the segment routing policy lifecycle. The Crosswork Optimization Engine framework
enables function packs that can be developed in the field to support additional use cases that are not
available out of the box. By leveraging software development kits (SDKs) and APIs, network operators
can build additional function packs to support more optimization workflows.
Cisco Crosswork Change Automation and Health Insights
The Cisco Crosswork Change Automation application automates the process of deploying changes to the
network. The user defines the orchestration via an embedded Ansible playbook; then configuration
changes get pushed to Cisco NSO to be deployed to the network.
Cisco Crosswork Health Insights performs real-time KPI monitoring, alerting, and troubleshooting. It
enables programmable monitoring and analytics and provides a platform to address changes to the
network infrastructure dynamically. Cisco Crosswork Health Insights builds dynamic detection and
analytics modules that allow operators to monitor and alert on network events based on user-defined
logic.

Crosswork Essentials and Advantage are sold as suites. Customers interested in individual
applications from the suite should consider a la carte options for each of the applications. The licensing of
the Crosswork Automation suites is based on three factors:
1. A flat annual fee that grants you access (Right to Use or RTU) to the base application software
included in the suite
2. A per-device Right-To-Manage (RTM) fee
3. 1-year to 5-year term contracts
Smart Licensing: Smart Software licensing delivers visibility into your license ownership and
consumption. Know what you own and how you are using it. It offers benefits from more straightforward,
standardized offers, license platforms, and policies. It allows you to make better-educated purchase
decisions to lower your operational costs and helps to discover the ease of deployment with automatic
license activation.
Please visit http://www.cisco.com/web/ordering/smart-software-licensing/index.html for more details.
NSO allows you to consume more licenses than you own with smart licensing.
NSO 4.6 and above requires the user to enter a Smart Account ID. However, ordering Smart-enabled
PIDs requires the customer to have a Smart Account. If you have purchased licenses using previous
PIDs, then the entitlements will have to be added manually to your smart account. Please get in touch
with the NSO PLM team (ask-nso-plm@cisco.com).
Cisco NSO Standalone for a Production Network: This applies when NSO is used in a production
network. See the SEULA for the exact definition:
https://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en_us/about/doing_business/legal/seula/nso-seula.pdf.
Cisco NSO Software Innovation Access (SIA): A software innovation access (SIA) subscription
provides customers a perpetual license purchase with a lower upfront charge and committed annual
charges for product updates, upgrades, and technical solution support. SIA shifts a portion of the upfront
value of a perpetual license purchase to recurring while enabling additional use of a customer’s CAPEX
budget. A minimum 3-Year initial purchase is required. However, customers can choose up to a 5-year
term. As part of SIA entitlements, major software version updates and upgrades during the subscription
period are provided. Contract renewal can take place at the end of the initial 3-Year term on an annual
basis.

Europe and we have a goal to use electricity generated from renewable sources for at least 85% of our
global electricity by the end of fiscal year 2022.
Embracing hybrid work: supporting a culture of well-being that is flexible and puts people first, we will
continue to make our products and our workspaces conducive to a positive and productive work
environment and empower employees to make smart travel and commuting decisions that benefit them
and the planet.
Environmental
Our approach to protecting the environment is an inclusive future takes everyone, including future
generations into account. Cisco has set long-term goals to address the environmental impacts from our
products and business operations.
We look for opportunities to minimize our impact on the environment in every corner of our business and
supply chain and seek ways technology can reduce energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
See what we made possible in 2020.
With Cisco, you receive the full benefits of our global supply chain and disposals infrastructure, including:

Social
Cisco’s actions related to our corporate social responsibility (CSR) are grounded in our Conscious
Culture, where trustworthiness and ethical conduct are expected and supported among our employees,
suppliers, and business partners.
We act boldly and deliberately to accelerate fairness, inclusion, and equitable access to opportunity—to
make a positive social impact. Internally, we strive to foster an inclusive and diverse culture where
employees can be their whole selves while building new skills, exploring areas of interest, and becoming
catalysts for social change.
Powering an Inclusive Future for All is not a vision Cisco can achieve by acting alone. Partnerships and
collaboration—with customers, governments, nonprofits, and even competitors—allow us to multiply our
efforts and scale our impact. We are building these partnerships to help achieve a common vision: a
world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Governance
Our Supply Chain Human Rights Governance Committee, chaired by the Senior Vice President of Supply
Chain Operations and comprised of senior supply chain executives, maintains executive oversight of risks
and opportunities within the supply chain. This committee allows us to integrate human rights policies and
priorities into business operations and garner feedback across functions. Supply chain representatives
also participate in Cisco’s Human Rights Advisory Committee, which convenes executive and senior-level
employees from across the company to drive Cisco’s overall business and human rights strategy.
We use supplier scorecards to measure and communicate conformance to Cisco’s requirements for
human rights and environmental stewardship. Having sustainability metrics alongside cost, quality, and
service delivery allows procurement managers to make informed decisions when awarding business to
suppliers.
