Connector
Connector VHX-7000 Series
Demand for connectors has been increasing due to the recent spread of digital and
communication devices. Meanwhile, connector types and applications have also diversified.
This guide introduces technical information related to connectors and observation examples
taken with digital microscopes.
Connectors are parts that connect wiring for electronic circuits and optical communications. The use of connectors makes
attachment and detachment easier.
Connector benefits
(1) Replacement makes repairs easy.
(2) Easy to upgrade with modularization.
(3) Parts can be easily assembled and productivity can be improved.
Name Description
One side of a pair of mating connectors that has a lattice-shaped contact at the point
Jack
of insertion. It is also called a female part.
Receptacle A connector used by attaching it to a panel or box and used together with a plug.
Header The male side of a connector used to connect flat cables, used as a set with a socket.
Socket The female side of a connector used to connect flat cables, used as a set with a header.

Connector Structure
Name Description
Terminals that make electrical contact when the connectors are mated. Knife-fork contacts and bellows contacts
are common.
Connection
within the device
The shape of the connector differs when boards are stacked
Board-to-board
atop one another and when one side is connected standing up.
connection
A header and socket are used as a set.
When used between devices, they are also called I/O (input/output) connectors or I/F (interface)
connectors. Circular, square, coaxial, and optical connectors are common.

USB 1.1/2.0
B
USB 3.0/3.1 This is the most common serial bus standard.
USB connector Blue is used for the insulation of the USB 3.0/3.1 connector to distinguish it
from USB 1.1/2.0.

Micro-B
Computers
IEEE 1394 A serial bus standard, but it was not as popular as USB due to patent
connector issues.
This 6P2C (6-pole, 2-core) modular connector is used for 2-wire telephone
RJ-11 connector
lines.
Communication RJ-45 connector This 8P8C (8-pole, 8-core) modular connector is used for LAN connections.
RS-232C Although the official connector is a D-Sub 25-pin connector, a small D-Sub
connector 9-pin connector is mainly used.
Communication
(Optical fiber)
Push-pull type connector. This type is small and is used in locations where
LC connector
high density mounting is required.

D-Sub 15-pin (DE-15) connector.
Non-destructive 3D measurement is
possible even for deep connectors.
