SUBIECTUL B – INTEGRATED SKILLS (60 points)

Read the text below and do the tasks that follow.
Anderson could not remember that he had ever been in the room before, yet every detail was as
familiar to him as if he had lived there all his life. The woman who had admitted him had asked him
to wait while she went to inform her brother who, she said, was upstairs. Anderson was expected,
she added, and would he make himself comfortable while he waited.
She left him standing in the poorly lit high-ceilinged room with the curtains half drawn to keep out the
night and the dust covers of the chairs. I know, he thought, without lifting the covers, exactly the
pattern of the brocadé on those chairs, and one of them, that one by the fireplace, has a broken
spring that digs uncomfortably into one's back when it is sat in. Without even looking, he could have
given the names of the books on the shelves, knew that the little clock on the mantelpiece was
permanently five minutes fast, and that if he pushed open the French windows, he could walk out on
to a wide lawn with rose borders and a sundial whose markings had been almost obliterated by age.
The portraits on the wall were also familiar to him, yet nameless, like faces seen in a dream. They
stared at him with sly, secret smiles, knowing and yet not known, and suddenly he was seized with
an inward panic, a terrible realization that he was no longer himself. Anderson had not come to see
over a house for sale, but he had entered another identity, that he was, in fact, someone else, a
stranger, about whose life he knew nothing yet to whom every object in that room touched some
chord of recollection.
