The char is quite uneven and lumpy on all the specimens. ‘30 | The intumescent char has ceased expanding end has filed the space 1 between the web and flange tips on all bearn sections. The char on web of short colurnns 1 and 2 has filled the space between the tlanges, and is approximately 40mm thick on the outes anges of column 2. The char of the web of short columns 3 and 4 has nearly filled the void between the flanges ‘and is approximately 50mm thick on the outside of the flanges of column 3 and approximately 40mm thick on the outer flanges of column 4. 35 | Acrack in the char on short beam 5 was observed running along the bottom comer of the bottom flange tip. 40 | Acrack in the char approximately 30mm wide has formed along the web of the main beam on both sides at approximately % height of the web. The crack extends along the length of the bearn. Occasional flaming from all ‘specimens was observed. 70. | The size of the crack in the char on the main beam has reduced slightly. ‘93 | Deflection of main beam is 142.2mm. Load removed from main beam. ‘98 | Small pieces of char are falling (rom the main beam. 134 | All sections are above 750°C. The maximum deflection after 93 rrinutes, just before the imposed load was removed, was 142.2mm. The deflection rate wes 14.2mm/min at this time. 6.4 Residual loadbearing capacity test ‘The result of the residual loadbearing capacity testis given in Appendix 2. 7 PERFORMANCE CRITERIA The standards‘ state that a beam is regarded as having a fire resistance (expressed in minutes) that is equal to the elapsed time (to the nearest completed minute) between the commencement of heating and the termination of heating, or until failure to meet the loadbearing capacity criterion occurs, whichever is the sooner. Failure is deemed to occur when the beam is no longer able to support the test load. This is taken as either of the following, whichever is exceeded first: (a) deflection of L/20 4250/20 = 212.5mm) {b) where the rate of deflection (in mm/min), calculated over tmin intervals, starting at {min from the commencement of the heating period, exceeds the limit set by the following equation: rate of deflection = L?/ 9000d (ie. 4250" / 9000 x 406) = 4.9mm. Where: Lis the clear span of the specimen (in mm); is the distance from the top of the structural section to the bbottom of the design tension zone (in mm). However, this rate of deflection limit shall not apply before a deflection of U80 (141.7mm) is exceeded. ‘The results only relate to the behaviour of the specimen of the element of construction under the particular conditions of test; they are not intanded to be the sole criteria for assessing the potential fire performance of the element in use nor do they reflect the actual behaviour in fires.
