The British Isles

a) What are the British Isles and where are they located?

The British isles are a complex mass of countries. They are located in the west of Europe.
There are the biggest isle called "Great Britain" and the smaller one called "Ireland"

b) How many countries are on these isles?

- 5 countries make up these islands

c) What are their names?

- The Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England.

d) Where are they located?

- They are located northwest of the European coast made up of two islands, Great
Britain and Ireland.

e) What are these countries ́ capitals?

- The Republic of Ireland > Dublin


- Northern Ireland > Belfast
- Scotland > Edinburgh
- Wales > Cardiff
- England > London

About the countries

a) Could you recognize these different countries ́ flags?

Yes.
The Republic of Ireland

Northern Ireland

b) Why did they decide to use these crosses on the flags? Find info about these saints.

Because they represent saints that are important for each country. For example:
● The England Cross represents Saint George who fought bravely with dragons and
considereddered a christian martyr.
● The northern Ireland cross represents Saint Patrick as a patron saint with a red
saltire on a white field.
● The Scotland cross represents the crucifixion of Saint Andrews and its cross is a
saltire because he believed himself not worthy to be crucified on a cross similar to
what Jesus had.

c) Explain their political situation, and the currency they use.

The political situation in the UK is managed by the royal family and followed by the prime
minister. The Republic of Ireland is part of the European Union and the euro is the currency
used in this part of the UK.
However, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England are not part of the European
Union. Furthermore, the currency used in this part of the UK is the pound sterling.
