Introduction

Red-light districts are urban areas associated with adult businesses and illegal activities, though many have strict operational policies. They can be found in major cities worldwide, with some becoming quite notorious, such as Troumba in Athens, Greece near the port of Piraeus. A gentrification project in the late 1960s transformed Troumba's neighborhood from one associated with red-light activities to one now filled with hotels, shops, and businesses, raising questions about what happened to the people who previously lived and worked there.

Have you ever heard the term “red-light district”?

The term first appeared in 1894 in a newspaper

article, but what does it actually mean?( cut) Red-light district is part of an urban space where adult
pleasure-oriented businesses are found. Parts of cities that have acquired a bad reputation and are
often associated with illegal activities even if in reality the majority of them have strict operational
policies.(cut) These districts are found in many big cities all around the world with some of them
being quite famous. In Athens, Greece near the port of Piraeus used to be one of the most notorious
red-light districts, Troumba. If you were to walk around Troumba’s neighborhood today though, all
you would see would be hotels, shipping companies and any kind of shops. What changed this area
would be the gentrification project that was initiated in the late 60s. The gentrification of his area
though brings up the question of what happened to the people who lived and worked there? Were
they all for this change_
